  • My local coffee scene is basically different versions of Dunkin Donuts, even the indie places have old coffee with chemical flavors. There is one place that serves a tasty espresso shot but it has inconsistent hours and is a 20 minute drive. Starbucks is closer and the app is super convenient.

We don't all live in big cities with lots of options and Starbucks fills the void.

  • fwiw, XMPP/Slack/Discord/etc basically solve the same problem that IRC already solved. Software Engineers just reinvent the wheel again and again as everyone loves a green field.

That said, Meta cannot be trusted. They're going to do a year or two of embrace and extend, pretending to be good citizens. Then they will invent some crisis that causes them to want to de-federate, likely that content on other servers is not moderated to their standards or that convoluted features of their extended protocol are not being met. This take seems pretty spot on to me.

  • Also people who have places to go, things to carry or don't live in places friendly to bikes. Maybe even people who think writing things in all caps is lazy. Not everything is caused by the conservative boogieman. Both nuance and effective communication are important.

  • Yup. Samsung sold smartwatches that promised an upcoming ECG feature to have it only available when connected to a Samsung phone when it came out, but not other Android phones. They also try and force you to put their TVs on your network so they can track everything you do. Never again.

  • Yes, but not because I didn't try. I tried Opera and Konqueror for a time and they had some serious rendering problems. Being on the Internet all day for work I kinda just need a browser that works. Firefox is that for me now, but it wasn't always up to the task.

  • Systemic change is a different conversation than a new president. Personally I think that change can happen with modifications to the existing system. For instance, Ranked Choice Voting would give us a more diverse set of choices and doesn't require throwing away things that do work.

  • It's tradition to go with the President if that person still wants the job. He'd have to say he no longer wants to run for the party to consider other contenders. Ideally he will remember how old he is sometime in the next couple of months and a boring centrist like Newsom will run in his place.
