  • It was also the name of an insane computer intelligence in a tabletop RPG game called RIFTS by Palladium Books. It originally appeared in RIFTS Sourcebook One from 1991, about a year after the initial release of Archie (the search engine). I don't know if the writer, Kevin Sembieda, took the name of the AI, A.R.C.H.I.E. Three, from this search engine or if it's just something he worked up on his own, but I've always thought that was kind of funny.

  • I support the idea, but I wonder how they even ban something like that? Are they going to try to set limits on gross margin for companies or control prices somehow? Do they try to artificially control inflation by mandating that prices can only rise X% within a certain amount of time on certain products? Or are they going to monitor the prices on foods and take action whenever a certain threshold is crossed? I think corporate price-gouging needs brought under control, but I don't know where you would start.

  • Except for southern “blue dog” Democrats, Abortion is a relatively “safe” topic to pander to single-issue voters on because the only people hyper-opposed to it are single-issue voters on the other side who were never going to vote liberal anyways. There’s virtually no down-side.

Israel is a more thorny & nuanced issue for Democrats though and not as clear cut. Israel is committing genocide and we shouldn’t be supporting them, but there’s alot of Jewish-American voters in key states, you’ve got AIPAC and a plethora of other Jewish/Israeli lobbies with alot of influence, you’ve got big military contractors who like Israeli money, and then you’ve got bigwigs in the military who see Israel as a strategic partner. Completely dropping support for Israel risks upsetting alot of interests and handing them over to Republicans to be used against Democrats. It’s shitty, but I’m assuming that’s the calculus going on with Democratic leadership.

Also, Israel is much much less reliant on the US for aid than in times past, and I think there’s a fear that if we stop supplying them, somebody else will and then we’ll have absolutely no influence over anything they do. We have much less influence over them than alot of people think. If they saddle up with China or Russia, the gloves come off and I think we’d see it much worse than it is now. As hard as that is to imagine, it can always get worse. And if we let Republicans get control, it will get worse.

  • How is it that a judge can just decide somebody can be arrested for no other reason than “they didn’t like their attitude”? If a crime hasn’t been committed and a person hasn’t been arrested, how does the judge have any say over what a private citizen is doing? I would expect them to have to have slightly more leeway over their courtroom and they can have people escorted out or whatever, but just being able to detain people for no reason seems like an abuse of power? Across the board it seems like the Judicial branch has too much power.

  • Yeah, but did Trump really need any help locking up that vote? It's not like they were going to flock over to Democrats anytime soon. He's just doubling down on demographics that were already going for him anyways. He needed a stable Pence figure that could convince "on the fence" voters that there was still going to be an adult in the room, or just somebody who is anti-Israel or supports Palestine, that probably would've caused the most chaos among Democrats. They'd disagree on everything else, but hey, this person is against genocide in Israel, let's vote for them.

  • I haven’t even been able to get it work using Nexus mods with my Steam version. I’m getting the intro screen/menu, but it never actually loads a new game after that. I’ll just wait a few months/years til I remember about it and try again.

  • I wish they would break apart events like this vs “serious” competitive sports away from each other and the Olympics. Some events/sports have verifiable results, like somebody ran this fast in this amount of time, somebody lifted this amount of kg of weights, actual results that are in some sense pushing the limits of what humans are capable of.

Then you have the artistic, interpretive events, though they still require alot of talent and skill, you can’t quantify them, you can’t measure them in any meaningful way. They’re judged subjectively using whatever standards were developed probably decades ago. I’m sure they’re great to watch for fans of those events, but they don’t feel like they’re pushing any limits of human expression or anything, the Olympics is way too sanitized for anything like that.

I don’t know what the solution though is, hold two sets of Olympics, the Sports Olympics and the Artsy Olympics (four total with seasonal olympics)? I think it’s too much of a world tradition at this point, but it bothers me that they’re all considered at the “same level”.

  • Events, or “things happening”, but there’s no real distinction between major or minor events, natural occurrences or “artificial” events initiated by living things, it’s all just shit happening all the time. A leaf falling from a tree, a baby being born, light reaching the Earth, a bomb going off, a gust of wind blowing, an ant dying, a barn getting raised, an asteroid smashing into a planet, someone picking their nose, a symphony plays, a baby cries, someone orgasms, crickets chirp, a body decays, a TV personality talks, the Earth rotates, the Sun radiates, a teacher speaks, a star is collapsing, rain is falling, a shot is fired, and on and on and on, everywhere all the time. “Everything” or “Life” as answers probably also work.

  • I use mine exclusively for emulation and ROMs, entire libraries of every single game released for older systems. The SD card I have for that runs them fine without issue. Potentially with newer/bigger games you might come across issues, that I haven’t really done at all.

  • Yeah, they were about to run out of steam on their offensive and were about to convert to a defensive footing, which would give them an advantage. Taking Russian territory forces the Russians to keep going on the offensive, which could strain them and prevent them from building up their manpower/equipment as much while on the defensive. There’s no way Putin can allow sovereign Russian territory to be taken by another country. It’s a bold move and I hope it pays off.
