I have own a rift and Q1, 2, and 3 (plus some older, but polished, Cardboard products) but have NOT had a VP demo. The jump from fresnel to pancake lenses - for productivity purposes - is substantial and I expect the VP's moderately higher resolution to be enough to make the headset actually productive (Q3 is close but still resolution handicapped). I expect the tight integration with OSX to be useful and, if I were (a) on OSX (b) didn't already work on an 8K monitor and (c) was a digital nomad or had no dedicated office/room in which to work, I could see a use case for them. Having attempted to work in i(Pad)OS professionally as a remote platform, the standalone capabilities might be useful for a blogger or journalist but is utterly unsuitable for professional work, even less so without a dedicated keyboard and mouse/advanced multitouch track pad. Again, I've not used the VP hand-sensing for advance selection* but my expectation is that it is still in its infancy, even with (and perhaos hindered by) eye focus selection.
My hope is that $3500/pop will allow more research, more fine tuning, and advancing to vision limited resolution (Apple is still a factor of 4 short in pixel count, and a factor of 6+ short of my desktop monitor) for future headsets.
multi-functional, 3D manipulation of, say, finite element model components or full building/industrial models in a program like Revit or multi-assembly models in Blender or Fusion360, where you have 4+ key modifiers plus 3 buttons and two scroll wheels for fine manipulation and hundreds of quick-key commands)
That seems unlikely. It would be hard to imagine that the total costs of planting and raising a movie-set quality corn field with industry labor rates would cost less than the returns on a 500 ac harvest of (I’m presuming) silage-quality corn.
I’m pretty sure that middle bit is like a springform pan. The handle is not solid - you squeeze it to make it sit in the waffle maker but when you remove it, it opens a bit to release. I have no room for this in my kitchen but am intensely intrigued. I might buy a new house so I can get a bigger kitchen and have a place for this.
I'm with you. As an engineer, I know a sprinkler works through the transition of potential energy (pressure) to kinetic energy (water jet) and the the law of momentum requires an opposite reaction to the ejected water. For the opposite you would still have the energy of the pump and the momentum of water which must change direction through the flow. OTOH, also as an engineer, I know that there are some effects we ignore or intentionally discount as being insignificant to "real world" applications. Depending on the application, 10% error may be more than close enough, or 0.1% might be. It's rare that anything beyond the third significant digit affects something an engineer would care about, but physicists deal almost exclusively in those fine differences (having worked with them) and weird things really do happen.
What's worse is when you think there's a discussion starting because it's "hot" and there's a comment thread started...only to find that the only comment in the body is the summary bot.
I've yet to find a modern use for usenet as I'm not in the habit of downloading everything as it comes out, nor of looking for content within a few days of release. Often I'm looking for 2-5 year old content or back catalog, and usenet has been a uniform landscape of incompletes, even with two blocks on independent providers (or they were when I bought the data blocks).
Prime used to mean something. Guaranteed 2 day shipping with no minimum for no extra charge. $5 for next day shipping. Then next day disappeared. Then the 2 day guarantee disappeared. Then delivery times were in the 3-5 day range for most things. Then, in my university town, around the time of students returning to school for terms it would be 1-2 weeks. I’m not paying an ever increasing annual fee for that.
There are only 8 interstate crossings and less than a 100 crossings of 2 lane roads. People moving across the boarder is not a huge concern. We are in the second stage of Foundation conquest, and commerce is the arbiter of civilization. Cut off commerce and you have, well - just look at Cuba.
Besides, it's not just the commerce. Block off regular transportation and revoke citizenship, and everyone left of semi-liberal in TX will leave - and with them most of the knowledge worker/white collar worker base. That's would do more to decimate the TX economy than any other pressure.
Not even. We take what’s ours, they can keep the land and what infrastructure is left. All federal funds are frozen and all US based assets for Texans are frozen until diplomatic relations are formally established and financial treaties are in place. All power, pipelines and rail are blocked/shut off at the border. All passports in Texas names are null, along with all no cost governmental passports. Military Checkpoints at all major roads in and out of Texas with nobody allowed in or out without a valid US passport. All airport and federal airport staff are reassigned or permitted to resign with negative SF50 rehire status. All airspace on the US side is closed to any transit.
Most of this can be accomplished in a week or two with the military securing the border operations (as is appropriate). It would be fair to allow, say, a month grace period for anyone who wants to stay in the US to relocate. After they are free to leave by the gulf or, if Mexico decides to honor the defunct passports.
