  • No, the time to deal with this was any one of the multiple times Trump was impeached but our Congress and Judiciary are apparently filled with spineless corrupt pond scum pretending to be humans.

  • Well AMD just blatantly copied Nvidia's naming scheme for their new GPUs so maybe they'll copy Intel for their CPUs. I mean, they kind of already did, since the Ryzen 9 is basically i9, and the Ryzen 7 is basically i7 etc. It's mostly AMDs mobile CPUs that have horrendous names, but Intel really isn't much better in that department.

  • Trump made a Truth Social post saying the US should look into buying Greenland. Like essentially everything Trump says it's utter bullshit and not something that could actually happen, and certainly not something Trump of all people could make happen. This is just Denmark subtly giving the finger to Trump which means the effort is wasted as anything more subtle than a baseball bat to the face won't register with Trump.

  • How would this generated electricity be transferred to the purchaser? So I generate 1 kW of power and get one of these tokens. I put that token up for purchase. Somebody buys that token entitling them to 1 kW. Now how does that 1 kW go from me to them? If the answer is the power company, now you need to rope them into this scheme and I'm not seeing any reason at all why they would do that.

  • It has been suggested that's part of the reason for the price surge. A lot of people just aren't buying from McDumpster anymore and so in order to hit the same levels of year over year profit increase they've raised their prices to make up for lost sales. So they have significantly fewer people paying significantly more money for the same shitty food. Ultimately this will lead to a death spiral, but they're so massive it's going to take a really really long time before they hit the bottom.

  • Well there's basically two possible states. Either Luigi didn't do it in which case the one who actually did is the hero and Luigi is just a proxy for this unknown individual, or he did do it in which case Luigi is the hero. Either way doesn't really change the sentiment as at the end of the day someone who was actively making the lives of millions of Americans worse and directly contributing to many thousands of preventable deaths was killed. Who actually pulled the trigger is kind of immaterial.

  • It's not really about the GOP as much as those running under the GOP. Republican candidates don't need the GOP to bankroll them because they get tons of funding from foreign nationals and corporations who see an opportunity in them to destabilize the US further and increase the wealth gap respectively. The DNC meanwhile mostly see funding from the same sources as a hedge against a Republican loss and in order for them to keep Democrats from running with progressive economic policies. But to do that they only need to dangle just enough cash in front of the DNC to sway their policies, not enough to make them actually win.

  • Everyone with an IQ over room temperature knew leaving the EU was a losing move for everyone but the oligarchs looking to snap up businesses for cheap. They're intentionally driving the UK economy into the ground so they can snap everything up in a fire sale knowing that their wealth is safely protected in foreign investments. They're trying the same playbook over in the US now. Trump will tank the US economy (not to mention gut the anti-monopoly regulations) and then the megacorps will start gobbling.

Has Brexit cost them anything politically? Or is it still the exact same bullshit as before Brexit happened? Sure seems like nothing has changed.

  • All of them contributed (particularly Rush Limbaugh), but they weren't pivotal the way Nixon and Reagan were. Nixon (well, his advisors technically) was the first one to really put forwards demonizing some minority group as an actual campaign strategy (in his case it was hippies and black people). It can't be understated how much that concept has shaped the modern Republican party to the point where that's almost the entirety of their modern strategy.

In many ways though, Reagan was the far more insidious of the two of them though. His long debunked trickle down economics that advocated for reducing taxes on the rich and corporations and eliminating regulations and oversight of businesses as a silver bullet to all economic issues not only set the economic policies of the Republicans, it even spread to the Democrats resulting in the useless "liberal" party we have today. The massive wealth inequality we see in America today is a direct result of Reagan, his policies, and his propaganda.

Those certainly aren't the only causes of our current problems of course. You've got the people you mentioned as well as people like Rupert Murdoch, and things like the Citizens United decision as well as even older and more fundamental issues like our first past the post voting system, but Nixon and Reagan were significant turning points.

  • That's because Nixon is the one who came up with the culture war strategy that Republicans have been running with ever since. Also the one responsible for the creation of Fox "News" and the 24/7 propaganda that's resulted from it. Nixon was one pillar of the shit hurricane that our modern government has turned into. The other two pillars being the economic policies of Reagan and the non-stop shit flinging and scandal of Trump. If Nixon or Reagan never happened we'd probably be in a much better position today than we currently are, Trump likely would never have happened.

  • Generally because he says the opposite of both the Republicans and the Democrats. And he's usually right. Bernie provides a glimpse of what we could have if we had an actual progressive party instead of an economically conservative party and a fascist party.

  • Absolutely nothing, it's utterly useless. The only useful info at this point would be if they can find some kind of evidence to prove this wasn't an accident, either some kind of intentional ignition source in the car, or a manifesto or some kind of proof of motive. Until either of those surface I'm just chocking this one up to Teslas doing Tesla things with some new years fireworks and camping supplies making it extra spicy this time.

  • No it's not illegal to access the porn, the porn sites are just required to "prove you're over 18" using an approved mechanism, which in practice means a scan of a state ID. Porn sites rightly don't want to touch that kind of PII with a 100 foot pole so are just blocking all access instead. Technically, they attempted to comply with the law exactly as the law requires so nothing illegal has occurred. Basically it's a giant waste of everyone's time and the only lasting impact is that VPN companies are loving this.

  • Not unless they're a minority or they kill or threaten someone rich and conservative. The rich part there is really important, they won't care if a poor conservative gets killed. They might care a little if a rich progressive gets killed, but only if they think there might be a chance it would lead to attacks on rich people in general.

  • Steve Bannon is obviously a giant racist douchebag, but I do have to say H-1B isn't great. It basically lets companies rent foreign workers for cheap. What I would like to see instead is a program to grant citizenship to skilled workers and fast track their immigration status. Companies would hate that of course because then skilled people would be less willing to accept low-ball offers.
