  • 2000 dot com crash, 2008 housing bubble, 2020 COVID recession, 2025 tariff downturn and looming crash. (That's not including the recessions from the 80's and 90's)

I count Afghanistan and Iraq separately, they were two very different wars and fought for different reasons. Afghanistan was because of 9/11, Iraq was oil and regime change.

  • The change from pay per episode to per month was a direct result of crApple's 30% tax. This hurt Patreon directly because a bunch of creators were pissed about the change and blamed Patreon for not fighting back, so they left. So Patreon has lost revenue over this, how much I have no idea but I know several of the podcasts I listen to have stopped asking you to pay via Patreon and are now asking you to donate via Substack or their private donation page.

  • I work in international freight for a mega corp, a few years back I was offered a position on days (I'm currently 3rd shift) with the promise of better hours, lower quotas, andquicker chance at promotion.

Day shift - spending all day on the phone getting yelled at by idiots who used a crayon and a napkin to hand write a bill of lading, and now are furious that I won't break multiple federal and international laws to get their fucking crate of plastic trinkets across the border.

Night shift - processing international shipping documents while listening to podcasts and audiobooks. 1 or 2 drivers call per night with issues that require 1 maybe 2 phone calls to resolve, generally resolved in less than 30 minutes and almost always I only speak with other knowledgeable professionals in the industry.

Now that the promotion is just around the corner, the extra two years I spent on nights was worth my sanity.

  • 41 years old and I've lived through 4 once in a lifetime economic events, one impending societal collapse (Y2K), a global pandemic, and the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. I vote Giant Meteor 2025, just get it over with already.

  • Oh look at Mr. Big shot over here. The rest of us can only get hootie and the blowfish in a kiddy pool. Oh well good for you.

No worries, I should get going too, my girlfriend is waiting for me in Canada.

  • Yep it sucks and we're stuck, but good on you for taking care of your grandad during all that. My aunt and uncle live in another part of the country and she had to care for him during his dementia decline, it was heartbreaking that there was nothing we could do to help. The only savings grace was that their oldest son is a state trooper and since he had to be out anyway he would stop by at the end of his shift and help out for a few hours every day.

Best of luck to you as well, and as you said stay positive.

  • 41, and only one sellable skill that only has a 50/50 chance of getting me into Canada. My issue is both my parents are elderly and need me around to take care of them, and will under no circumstances move anywhere. So I couldn't in good conscience leave.

I'm not married, I have no kids, my plan is just keep my head down, take care of my parents, and once they're gone sit back and wait for death.... which will probably be from a disease thanks to the gutting of the CDC and NIH.

  • Yep, podcast addict premium user for several years now. Rock solid app, though I do wish it supported the full podcasting 2.0 feature set, all of the namespace, V4V, wallet integration, ect. But for now I just use fountain for my 2.0 shows and it works, it's just annoying.

  • Seriously, I remember taking a disposable camera with me on our school trip Washington. I also remember that it was during that trip that we all found out you could open those things up and turn them into mini tasers.

  • There's a pizza place in the nearby city that has almost the same number as mine, there's just one number difference. For the last few years I've been answering numbers I don't know as the pizza place. When they ask for me I act frustrated and say,

"look I'll tell you what I tell all the other telemarketers, you bought a bad list and got the number for a pizza place. "my name" doesn't work here, and never has. Now do me a favor and drop this number, I'm getting sick of giving this speech 10 times a day".

If they haven't hung up by that point, which they usually have, I say have a good day then hang up. I've noticed my spam calls have significantly dropped off after starting this, maybe it's coincidence and they're dropping my number because it's not generating income, but just in case it is working I'm going to keep doing it.
