  • Just a minor correction here, HS1 was not built with public funds. Indeed Thatcher wrote into the Channel Tunnel Act 1987 a clause making it illegal for any public subsidy to reach the tunnel or its connecting line. As a consequence, St Pancras is the only privately owned railway station on the national network, and HS1 itself is owned by a private consortium.

  • Yes, a widespread nickname…

Soccer is short for Association Football. If you really want to fixate on club names for some reason, you can take in Wrexham AFC, AFC Bournemouth, AFC Wimbledon, Barrow AFC, but I don’t see the relevance myself.

  • Found a PDF of a 2014 study by Stefan Szymanski at the University of Michigan. Compares Soccer/Football use in The Times, NY Times, British football bibliography, Guardian, Independent and Time Magazine.

  • As the close relative of a football journalist, I spent my early life surrounded by historical books, journals, fanzines and programmes from around 1900 to the 2000s. Strikingly, pre-1970s, soccer and football were wholly interchangeable in every social grouping, every purpose, every outlet. Dockers down the pub would talk about footy, football, or soccer as if it meant the same thing. It is only with the xenophobia of the 70s that it became an “American” word and a naughty thing to say in certain company.

  • Parliament has a handy guide to the difference.

Parliament and the Government are different. They have different roles and do different things.

    What is the Government?

HM Government consists of the Prime Minister, their Cabinet and junior ministers, supported by the teams of non-political civil servants that work in government departments.

  • Cameron? May? Johnson? Fucking Truss?

He is disappointing on the Middle East, but it’s literally his job to get the best deal for the UK regarding US trade. If that means tickling a fragile ego, sure why not, an easy win. If it’s proper labour you want, he’d have to denounce every US president since FDR as a fascist abomination.

  • Starmer won’t do much if anything about it. They’ve already sent the sternly-worded email. If anything he’s relieved that there’s a distraction from one of his MPs being arrested for child rape yesterday.

  • Under the Westminster system, Parliament is a separate entity to the Government, even though members of the government are nearly always members of the parliament. It goes back to the English Civil War and what’s run by Kings and what’s run by the electorate.
