My worst nightmare is not engaging my mind and turning into a reactive mush pile that yells at a TV screen out of manipulated fear. I see what's happened to my mother and how my father has maintained his sanity.

I plan to "work" until I can't. However, at some point, I plan on retiring from my career and getting into re-wilding and offering my services and knowledge at a steeply discounted rate so I can work with and train people in a field our planet needs. Hopefully doing some field work and manual labor alongside younger people that can out pace me and teach me their knowledge & skills about the natural world that I didn't learn. That, or starting some sort of no-til organic community farm/ranch or something else that engages my brain & body that provides greenspace.

I don't want to take jobs away from those that need them and I figure this will be a good way to avoid my worst fears, keeping positions open for those that need them, and to pass my knowledge along to the specialists that are growing in the knowledge space I excelled in in my carerr (software data science & engineering).

Years ago Firefox had a massive memory leak that would wind up crashing FX randomly or just crushing your system resources. The bug persisted for years. and I swirched to Chrome to get away from that poor experience. A few years back, a random community contributer, that was also fed up, dug in and fixed several issues responsible for the leaks. I remeber thinking that I should give FX a go again, but didn't until relatively recently.

I switched on my personal devices (need to use chrome for gsuite integrations at work).

On desktop, it's great and I'm loving it. And kicking myself for not switching back sooner after the massive-years-long-memory-leak was finally fixed a few years back

On mobile, it's mostly great. The privacy focus, ad block support, and plug-in support is a plus. But I realllly want the tab groups that mobile Chrome introduced a while back. That had such a great mobile UX that I've found myself still loading up chrome now and then when I find myself wanting that UX. I looked to see if there were plugins that could make that possible, but was disappointed to see none and let down that it seems impossible with the current tab implementation.

Format your README better. And don't be a condescending jerk and say "wikipedia is your friend". If you can't explain what you're doing here we're going to question your solution. You don't have to write a white paper, but enough to show you actually understand the concept enough to explain it in brief then you provide links to detailed refefences.

Comment your code. Meaningful names are great, but you should be explaining complex concepts and algorithms within your code. This provides clear intent to people using and maintaining your code if implemented directly.

What I'd really love to see more of is tech co-ops and unions.

With the current wave of corporate tech layoffs, I'm seriously surprised I'm not seeing more movement on the tech unions. Not so surprised I'm not seeing many co-ops since that business model is rarely used, but really should be invested into by more smaller tech shops. Additionally, unless you're an AI startup or some other buzz-tech startup trying to grift the trend wave, the investor money has mostly dried up outside of a few people that have actual knowledge in the space and understand that there needs to be more diversity in the tech space or else innovation stifles.

Windows 10 & 11comes pre-packaged with generic wifi and bluetooth drivers that work with the vast majority of the common chipsets.

If a device has forgotten which driver it has, re-aasining the generic driver should be enough to get you operational enough to go grab any advanced drivers for extended device functionality.

Also, as an FYI, I had a fleet (~150) of decommissioned machines (probabaly 20-30 different model over 5 makes) I was converting into a Linux(Deb) distrubuted node automation farm. The amount of times I had to go find drivers (network interfaces were the cost common) that supported the hardware that Linux didn't have default driver support for was prevelant. That was a very long 2 weeks.

No, what I miss are tools for searching for communities that actually work. While technically those use algorithms to find communities, but I don't miss "the algorithm".

My biggest problem with lemmy is discovery.

Newsom can't win middle America. He's seen as "Arrogant California Elite" outside the coasts. He's a great candidate on paper and did amazing things for Cali even if there's this he did I was infuriated by. But outside the coasts his image is sullied by his political history as a California governor.

Additionally, Newsom is not running and wouldn't even think of running unless Biden dropped out, which isn't going to happen unless he has a tragic health event.

And his sycophants will allow him. Followed by mass deportationss and concentration camps of "illegals". Then declarations of naturalization of certain people to have been illegal (DREAMERs beware) to be in the next wave. Simultaneously our trans friends will be picked up. Every gay man and women will have to tread carefully or be declared a pedophile and rounded up too, and it'll only be a matter of time before they round up every outed gay person that doesn't provide them some leverage over some group.

I dont think Biden is great by any standard. And his continued support of Israel's actions in Gaza are no different than any president since Israel was forcefully taken away and given to them post WW2.

Let's remember what's at stake here. We either defeat Trump and fight for Biden to implement incremental progress and push away from Israel. Or Trump wins and the USA becomes a fascist Russian puppet state and the world is going to descend into another war.

Progress is incremental until there's a wave of change. History has repeatedly shown this. And we've seen what that wave of change is when the fascist wave comes. And the world vowed to never let it happen again. Let's not forget what our grandfather's and great grandfather's fought for.

I umm, think you could possibly get 50-70% more salary jumping companies fairly easily. $67k (base) is sorely underpaid for a skilled data center engineer. A quick search confirms my suspicion that a data center engineer makes on average ~$145k a year.

The Toyota 3000GT is also really effective. My friend and I used to play this religiously back when it was new. I used the GTO, him the 3000GT. We'd spend hours doing custom tuning and testing before saving our cars to memory cards and hanging out to race.

Researchers and low level technology engineers tend to work in bits. I don't have access to the full journal publication to verify, but it's likely that the journal publication used that number and that the Gizmodo author/editor that choose the title just didn't bother converting it to more "consumer friendly" terms.

We use bits, megabits, terabits, and petabits fairly standardly in tech.

That's not to be confused with bytes, megabytes, terabytes, and petabytes. Server farms will contain Petabytes (PB) of data.

Technically there's also exabit/byte, zettabit/byte, and yottabit/byte as we continue to climb the chain of technical capabilities. It's estimated that the internet overall has nearly 200 Zettabytes(ZB) of information in 2024.
