  • It's official: note taking app with 0 advantages over just plain ass notes synced via cloud signs death warrant.

For real, FOSS software that saves to a file folder and does all of this exists. They are just chasing us into their arms.

  • I mean, they are literally mounting campaigns targeting gays now. Maybe it sucks for both but it sucks especially hard for gay people in Russia at the moment.

E.g. Maybe it sucks to live in Mordor. But as a Goblin instead of as an Orc, maybe it sucks especially hard when Sauron starts the "let's purge the Goblins" campaign led by the Orcs.

  • To everyone cracking jokes about a gay uprising, it's a lot simpler than any of that.

They just want to exterminate the gays. Like literally. They want to find that portion of the population and destroy it, because they think it's disgusting and evil.

That's it. Putin and the Russian conservatives are going after gays because it's an easy win with their conservative base, and they can claim moral superiority. Also distracts from Ukraine.

If you are gay in Russia... Its a very bad time to be gay in Russia.

  • If there is ever a next successor to Blurays, for VR film or something, their DRM could be linked to a validation server. Once it's always online what you describe becomes possible.

Currently Blurays and dvds are designed for offline playback, and are read only, so their licenses are always valid and perform no verification.

  • Legally, you own a disc, and a limited license to view the contents of the disc.

It's effectively full ownership, but this same "limited license" model is how they fuck you over digitally, because without the disc, they can, at any time, revoke that limited license legally, because it was limited and they never granted full ownership. This is why the legality of pirating a movie you already own on Blu-ray is morally correct but legally wrong, because your license only grants you that one disc, in that one format.

I fucking hate it. The fact we dont have better property laws for media and IP is insane.

  • Artists and porn artists.

Bluesky hasn't got enough of them yet, mastodon apps aren't quite on that level yet.

Also overseas users. Lots of Japanese developers are sticking with it for now, until they have to go back to mixi or some shit.

  • "Microsoft wants to charge rent on all games on all platforms."

Gamepass is like early Netflix. It's a good value now. But once it reaches a large enough subscriber base, it fundamentally takes over publishing. Everyone copies the model because consumers are trained not to buy, and you wind up literally unable to buy things outright anymore.

Don't think it happens? Try watching the Willow TV series on Disney Plus.

I hate paying perpetual rent in items I should own. I recognize gamepass is a good value, but still would rather own a game forever than see Nintendo and Sony take this same approach.

  • Buddhist monks in Tibet have been martyred as China murders them systemically and tries to insist Tibet doesn't exist, only west China.

Sihks in Punjab have many recorded martyrs and the Sihks killed in the Hindu-led ethnic cleansings in the 1984 Sihk massacre are considered martyrs of the faith.

It's common, just not as common in Judeo-Christian based faiths.

  • I mean, I'm not religious or Muslim. I don't believe in Martyrs really. But there aren't really Atheist martyrs. I mean, I guess you could die for the cause of Abolition or something and rhetorically be a "martyr" in the anti-slavery cause, but it's borrowing religious terminology.

    That's all I'm getting at. It's a religious term.

  • It is a matter of faith, quite literally. But it's just good to be aware that many other cultures don't require a papal seal to acknowledge martyrdom. It's been somewhat co-opted by the Taliban in headlines, but there are tons of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist and other martyrs over time.

Tl;dr: these victims were innocent, and died because of their homeland and their faith. That's why they are being called martyrs. It's an apt descriptor.

  • Martyred also means died righteously in most faiths. As in, innocents who were murdered in the crusades were Martyred. This is less the case is Christianity (which names few martyrs) and more with other faiths.

So yes, many see the civilians who just wanted to live on their homeland and were bombed into kingdom come for existing just because of their faith, as martyrs.

  • What does "the politically correct line" mean to you though? That's a very loaded phrase and you seem to be indicating that you want to say stuff that is "controversial" without expressing any of it.

Like, Gender Dysphoria is a nuanced topic and can be felt in cis people, but there is a strong, STRONG anti-Trans effort to point at that and say "ah hah! See!" as if it somehow invalidates trans experiences.

That's why moderation is so harsh, because often the nuance becomes a tiny crack that actual bigots will pounce on, and argue in bad faith. I mean this sincerely, I'm an audience of one but if you are sincerely just having questions I'd be happy to speak via DM.

But if the "politically incorrect" feeling is "I don't think my kid is really dysphoric just confused", that is a large part why spaces stop such discussion. Note i am not saying this is you, but as an example. This example focuses on invalidating how the child feels and dismissing it as something else. Which can be very dangerous.

Anyways, my offer to talk stands.
