  • If your email server is offline then mail won't be delivered. The sender's server will retry as other have noted, but how often and how many times varies. Hosting at home, even when possible, is not a great idea in my opinion.

There are endless options for hosting out there, I don't want to name names since I only really have experience with one.

  • That is not my experience.

  • Not for everyone, but self-hosting isn't so bad.

  • Majel Barrett played both Nurse Chapel and Number One in the original series, but these two actresses in SNW look nothing alike.

  • No.

  • I have a better idea: just use metric.

I try to fully metrify my workplace and my teammates are receptive because everyone knows imperial units suck.

  • Hellboy - 17%

I watched it once (on an airplane 😆) and remember really enjoying it.

  • I like Star Wars Episode 1: the Phantom Menace, but I’ll admit it is purely for nostalgia. I remember the ad campaign from the time, and watching the movie warps me instantly back to 1999, eating Taco Bell and playing Pod Racing on the N64. It’s not a good movie, but it brings me happiness.

I really appreciate this movie more now than I did before the sequels came out. It's a bit of that contrast, a bit of nostalgia, but I recently re-watched and quite enjoyed.

  • I joined WhatsApp after many years of holding out, there was simply no other practical way to keep in touch with many people. The ways I mitigate the privacy concerns are:

    1. I got an international eSIM, for the purpose of cheap roaming abroad but since I now had this extra phone number not tied to my identity, I used it for WhatsApp.
    2. I installed WhatsApp using Island so it has access to just the contacts in the "work profile", that is, just people who have WhatsApp anyway.
  • Yes, I would agree that season 3 of Picard was the best but that's more of a criticism of the first two seasons (mostly the second). The problem with it that it was almost exclusively nostalgia. The main idea that the Borg biologically manipulated Picard and made a comeback that way was not bad, but the details of the story were a hot mess.

I say Lower Decks is the best of recent Trek.

  • Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks (?) will have to be really really really good to compensate for the embarrassment that was Picard. And so far SNW is just OK, so I don't think 2023 on average is gonna be that good, although maybe better than almost all recent years.

  • Matrix was introduced a few months before Discord was launched in 2015, so better say that Discord is the proprietary and centralized alternative to Matrix 😜

  • I also had a privacy incident with Facebook, when they came up with "featured photos", five of my photos only viewable to friends (as all my posts were) suddenly became public in this featured photos album that was created for me. However I'm skeptical of the Mistress Matisse accusation that Facebook changed her display name to her legal name that she never gave... My guess is that either she was hacked, or that it's some sort of human error (meaning she did accidentally put in her name). Also, you can still find her account on Facebook, even though it says in the intro that it's not used (but why keep it?).

But this is pretty much beside the point for the article, that only uses this tweet to make the point that "Facebook bad". Even if Threads never federates, people there (or on Tweeter, Truth Social or wherever) can still mention your Mastodon handle or just your name and bring you unwelcome attention that way. So the premise is weak.

That said, I'm against Threads federation, but for different reasons.

  • Many, but I would shout-out DAVx⁵ and Bitwarden.

  • It's well past 15:00 EST and the version I get when downloading is 102.13.0 for some reason.

Edit: solved by itself after some minutes, probably a CDN thing.
