I remember when we had forums, it was ok to be upset sometimes.

I remember mods and admins that would ban you because you gently disagreed with something they said.

There wasn't a moderation team -- it was one weird guy that got off on power.

I just use my kindle as intended: using Calibre's "email" button to load 100% legally obtained books via it's _______@kindle.com address.

There are jobs where it's not feasible or practical to pay an actual human to do.

Human translators exist and are far superior to machine translators. Do you hire one every time you need something translated in a casual setting, or do you use something Google translate? LLMs are the reason modern machine translation is is infinitely better than it was a few years ago.

One of the major problems with LLMs is it's a "boom". People are rightfully soured on them as a concept because jackasses trying to make money lie about their capabilities and utility -- never mind the ethics of obtaining the datasets used to train them.

They're absolutely limited, flawed, and there are better solutions for most problems ... but beyond the bullshit LLMs are a useful tool for some problems and they're not going away.

I somehow got on the Trump campaign's email list and periodically get garbage from them. I received the following email less than 4 hours after it happened.

One: that comment you deleted where you put the dollar sign ($) in the wrong spot -- nobody does that.

Two: your "American English" (while excellent) sounds ... off, when read aloud.

Three: you can read the following Shibboleth aloud and you'll have no idea what it means:

Yes, the notoriously racially homogeneous nation of Russia. Clearly it's a race thing, and not a nationality thing. And clearly they're talking about the entire ethnic "russian" population -- not the state itself and its leadership.

Again, we're talking about actual children. You know: people that have yet to mentally develop to the point where they can make fully informed decisions on everything and sometimes have to be "coerced" by reasonable adults into doing so.

There's this wild, outlandish idea that kids don't have the maturity, experience, or impulse control to make informed and rational decisions all the time. Thus we don't give kids the exact same rights and responsibilities we give to adults -- they gradually gain them as they mature and demonstrate they can handle them.

How would you like this installed in your workplace?

Yes, because my workplace staffed entirely by people 21+ is the same thing as a school filled with literal children. Also, for some unknowable reason we don't have issues with people vaping in the building despite having people that smoke and vape. Couldn't possibly have anything to do with the fact none of us are teenagers.

Everyone (even kids) have a reasonable expectation of privacy, but children using drugs in school isn't something that falls under that reasonable expectation of privacy.

How dare people cope with something horrible by making jokes. Everyone knows it's impossible to make those jokes while simultaneously being horrified by and pushing back against the thing they're joking about.

As fucked as the poultry industry is, that's not really a thing for a couple reasons. First is the FDA banned that practice, so in the USA at least you're not going to find any poultry products where hormones or steroids are used -- "hormone/steroid free!" is marketing BS stating they're not doing something illegal.

Second: we've selectively bred chickens (broilers) that grow so freakishly fast and big you don't need to give them hormones or steroids -- their bodies naturally produce excessive amounts. These are chickens that need their food supply controlled because they will literally eat themselves to death if allowed to. They grow so large and quickly it's common they develop leg issues leaving them immobile, and most will "naturally" start to die of heart attacks if they aren't killed after 8 weeks.

-- But it generally does in developed countries as the majority of people going through the effort of keeping chickens in that environment are into keeping chickens. You might get some shitty setups, but the norm is decent quality feed and far less stress than large scale commercial setups.

It's more of a hobby than a "get rich" scheme.
