  • Kind of the opposite of the Titan submersible regarding pressure differential. The inside of the Hyperloop pods are kept at atmospheric pressure. If the tunnel became depressurized it would only reduce the pressure differential in the pod. Of course they'd all be liquefied in a crash at the proposed speeds...

  • Re: Tipping points

The Clathrate gun hypothesis scares me big time. Probably because in this older science fiction novel the aliens were going to blow up part of the ocean floor to create the hot atmosphere they needed.

  • Oatmeal is predictable, pretty healthy depending on your toppings, and filling. It is not overly exciting and doesn't cause much emotional response. You still should to eat more than oatmeal, though. Quality, but diversity too. The Economist has had a reliable capital bias since its inception (it's so old you can read them hand wringing for what the end of American slavery is going to do to business). Doesn't mean their stuff is bad. You probably do consume more than oatmeal and I don't mean to paint you as univerous (did I make that up? moniverous?) but I thought I'd put this message out there.

  • This either happens a lot or it happened a few weeks ago? I guess the official US statement is the news? Is it that the US is doing the same and so can't react too strongly or can they not prove it was the Chinese government? Seems kind of like it should be a bigger deal. Not long before nation-state cyberattacks are going to count similarly to actual nation-state physical attacks.

  • unless everyone is blatantly lying, it doesn't seem like it:

“This was a very advanced technique used by the threat actor against a limited number of high value targets. Each time the technique was used, it increased the chances of the threat actor getting caught,” said Google Cloud’s Mandiant senior vice president and chief technical officer Charles Carmakal. “Kudos to Microsoft for leaning in, figuring this out, remediating, collaborating with partners and being transparent.”

“Last month, U.S. government safeguards identified an intrusion in Microsoft’s cloud security, which affected unclassified systems. Officials immediately contacted Microsoft to find the source and vulnerability in their cloud service,” National Security Council spokesperson Adam Hodge said in a statement to The Wall Street Journal. “We continue to hold the procurement providers of the U.S. government to a high security threshold.”>

  • And the sounds! The articulated clamshell that popped open to receive the MD (where you could see all these miniature mechanisms), the slightly rattly plastic sound of putting the MD in the player, just chef's kiss. I had a couple in my last years of high school that I ordered from a Japanese importer. Seemed sooo futuristic. Almost forgot the inline remote! iPods had those for a minute years later but everyone gave up on inline remotes it seemed like.
