  • I agree for the most part.

I think you're really describing social media rather than "the internet". Of course some elements of the internet still enrich our lives.

Social is tricky. As much as I dislike the term I think an "addiction" is probably the most app. I just naturally open up some kind of feed when I need to take five minutes off. It certainly doesn't enrich my life.

  • Not really. Perhaps people could foresee some dissatisfaction with Trumps presidency, but this article is talking about a longer trajectory, as in building towards all out civil war.

I don't think that's a generally held opinion amongst americans.

  • Yeah.

I can't remember exactly how it goes here in Australia, but I haven't carried my ID with me (we don't have electronic ID yet) for 5 years or so and have never encountered any problems.

I think, if they're going to fine you (like for speeding or whatever) then you have to identify yourself but not necessarily by providing a physical ID. I think you just give them your name and DoB and they look it up, and match it to your car.

The only other time I can recall being stopped is for a breath / alcohol test. You don't need any ID if you're not over the limit.

I don't recall any other interaction with the police of any kind really.

  • Yeah I can't remember the reasoning / evidence but I do remember reading that Cleopatra was unlikely to have been beautiful or "sexy". IIRC it's indeed because she was likely to have congenital deformities due to inbreeding - much like those of Tutankhamen.

She was extraordinary powerful, well educated, and had a terrifying intellect. Additionally she would have bathed daily which would have been alluring in that era.

That said, there's no shortage of other powerful Egyptian babes, Nefertiti and Hatshepsut come to mind.

Edit: Plutarch the Roman historian said something diplomatic like physical beauty is not her most striking feature. Which, when talking about a ruler, is saying she's ugly.

  • I don't get what you mean by "and no one figured that out yet."

I mean there's many experts watching the same footage who are not making an assertion that the pilots got confused about the landing gear and the flaps.

  • I'm not an expert, but pretty much every plane crash expert on the planet is watching the same footage and saying they don't know what's happened.

It's absurd to suggest the pilots accidentally retracted the flaps and no one figured that out yet.

  • I had kids a couple of years ago.

Before having kids I didn't really have time for "gaming", but I did lounge around watching TV for a few hours before sleep.

Now with kids it's pretty much the same dynamic, but that few hours down time is interspersed with tending to the kidlets.

  • The legal system is just not equipped to deal with the threat implied by Trump.

In the US it seems like judges are just another executive arm of the government anyway.

The few actual judges still considering the law just get perpetually paused with appeals and what have you.
