  • Oh man. I would think twice if my cost was that high.

I do believe good creators should be compensated so I think of this subscription as the alternative to letting the advertisers pay them to get in front of me. I think ad blockers result in the creator not getting the ad revenue, right?

  • Getting sick of these strange new hCaptchas. Click the thing that's only appearing once? Click I this exact order 😱🥺😅😂🤞. Click the stadiums from SimCity?!? Hopefully websites switch to turnstile fast.

  • When FB came along it was the first service that made connecting with both your close friends and acquaintances fairly convenient. Myspace had a thing going for sure but if I remember my experience was connecting with my closest friends (which we could already do with chat or email) + randoms.

FB actually found your friends and acquaintances for you. In the beginning, that was the only thing you saw too... not a page full of ads and people you don't know.

As we all know it's gone. That's why we've all stopped going there to connect. It's gone and the information we posted to share with friends was used inappropriately.

There is also nonstop pressure coming from potentially disruptive social startups. The people have fractured into many many different apps now.

But I don't see a problem with that. The total number of people online is higher then ever. Old phpBB forums were awesome with only a few thousand users, and something like that will come again. We don't need Facebook groups that are filled with adspam.

Seems like there's a ripe opportunity for a federated group system.

  • I think this is a group of people who identify with being told what to believe by strong personalities who take strong positions.

Doesn't matter what they are told, that's not the point. It's the freedom from being asked to think, which if you consider it for a while, is a heavy burden removed.

  • Upvote this question, it's pretty relevant to the issue of whether this would have been good for Apple (no, it would not have been)

DDG is my default search on mobile, but half the time I end up back on Google. Google is better at guessing exactly what I want and giving that content fast, such as the weather, people always ask answers, or quick facts about things that saves me from loading the site underneath the result.

But sometimes I know exactly what I want and Google won't give it to me - because it decided I want something else.

That's where a well built query can work better on DDG. However... DDG is more susceptible to backlink spamming and old school SEO techniques to rank content near the top. So depending on the people behind the search results, some queries are fine and some can still be garbage.

Also for image and video search Google is top.

  • Well, it's open source... so that cat is not going back in the bag so to speak. Some technophobe countries will try to set up a bunch of laws but outside their borders the craziness will persist. I think the only way past this is to go straight through. We're going to see a lot of people manipulated.

  • I think this type unauthorized use of somebody's likeness is going to define the next wave of AI image and video generation. Sadly a lot of people will fall for it because they don't know how good it is.

There was that teenager in Spain who was arrested for making nude AI models of his female classmates. I've had friends match with people on Tinder who then later send nude pics of them - AI generated - along with a demand for money or they will misuse it. It's going to get a whole lot worse before the public is educated about this.

But that's just the nasty small scale stuff. We're going to see celebrities and public personas in all kinds of questionable roles, appearing so authentic that average people won't notice it's deepfaked. Great.

It's going to be a scammers wet dream for a while.
