  • Those original HP lasers were absolute beasts. You could put it outside in the snow and if you even hovered over the print icon it'd start to get ready to serve. I bet there are still many in use today.

Regrettably that era of producing quality is mostly finished.

In recent years I've had a lot of good experiences with small Brother and Xerox branded MFP devices. There's still issues here and there if you rely on wireless printing or huge duplexed jobs, but they mostly just crank away for years if you keep feeding them toner cartridges and occasionally a new drum kit.

  • It is a surprise, especially given the unplanned data center moves and micro-services debacle. I can imagine there were a lot of frantic phone calls from current Twitter engineers to former Twitter engineers begging for help at various points along the way. I wonder if any of the ex-engineers required expensive pre-paid consulting contracts before offering any assistance!

  • What a strange saga. Elon fundamentally miscalculated what Twitter meant to it's users before the acquisition and didn't spend any time trying to figure it out at the start.

The first few months' dramatic changes were like watching a train wreck, so it's no surprise usage was going up. At the time Elon was the chief troll and every day brought some crazy announcement. For some reason that is not a surprise, his posts were always at the top of every feed.

I think today it's just a sad state of affairs and everybody is bored with the antics. You can't build a social media presence on a site like this.

Finally the rebrand to X was clearly a miscalculated attempt to get fleeing users to reconsider, it's just that instead of bring old users back he got current users to reconsider and bail.

  • Isn't this an act of cutting off your face to spite your nose? I understand that Reddit wants to monetize it's for AI models. But if the content gets moved into a walled garden, and reddit's own search features don't improve dramatically, then what's the point of going to Reddit?

  • Your comment brings up the most relevant point against MAID and it's clear we can be a better society than one which pushes people over the edge, or let's them fall despite their pleas.

I too am glad that you managed to fuck it up and that you're here with us.

  • Yeah that'strue. From what little I know OJ is allowed to make/keep enough so that he's far from destitute, but he sure hasn't don't anything redeeming since.

I guess if you know your work would lead to money that you can't keep, you'd choose to just not work.

  • It takes time. Lemmy is still pretty niche and reddit just has a decade+ of accumulated lurkers.

The important part is that the best people from Reddit are here now.

  • The repub constituents approve of this behavior? Do they even know what's going on?

Why aren't these 5 or so holdouts getting absolutely reamed on the national stage for blocking the entire country from getting anything done? The national media should be shaming the constituent districts too for sending these clowns to congress.

Going to work for government never meant getting things exactly your way. It means finding compromises that work for all the people.

Can't do that job then get the F out.

  • That's... wild.

Aside from whatever you feel about this guy, he's fucked. It might take some time but the victims will start to get court orders to seize his assets, which they can then present to banks, police, and other authorities, who will then turn them over directly.

The USA has it's fingers in almost every financial network in the world and Alex Jones can no longer be safe anywhere except basically crypto, bad actor countries, and I guess cash in his mattress. For the rest of his life. And he can't escape it with bankruptcy.

He'll be better off trying to get citizenship in Russia or China or something and never coming back.

  • I remember using Trillian to overcome the MSN/AIM/ICQ boondoggle and it didn't take long until all of those hosts started to fight back by complicating their protocols making it hard for the Trillian devs to emulate authentic clients.

The truth is that Youtube doesn't want creators to own their identities because Youtube wants to own the viewers and tell them to watch whatever will make Youtube more money. Kind of the same as why reddit believes it has a moral authority to take over and control a subreddit that was built by a moderator.

Youtube wants viewers to be "Youtubers" not "Mark Rober viewers" or whatever. Otherwise Youtube becomes some kind of free hosting service. But they CAN help new creators get discovered by vast quantities of viewers if they so choose, which they offer hypothetically in return for a piece of the ad revenue which they can secure when the viewers are kept as Youtubers.

Youtube will work hard to break any 3rd party front end such as this one for sure.

Anyways, I hope GrayJay can attract a good following before the platforms figure out how to block them.

The first team or company who figures out how to let content creators own their identities completely - ActivityPub style on their own instances - combined with someone who figures out a compensation/revenue system and a way to drive viewers will probably be the Youtube/Twitch killer.

Actually, now that I think about it, what's the core difference between everyone spinning up a WordPress that's RSS fed into a reader?
