  • Coming back to say that I got it to print based on the suggestions in the thread.

I settled on a 3mm retraction length in PrusaSlicer which left a minimal amount of stringing. Printed flawlessly after that change.

  • As more of these are announced, fewer casual twitter lurkers will visit the site. Then it will become socially unacceptable for remaining brands to stay, and they'll leave too. Prolific twitter posters will find they no longer have any reach, so they'll just fade out.

Seems like the toilet is mid flush.

  • That's awesome! That particular dream is far from unobtainable, but I think it went from basically a gimme for anybody who followed the college degree route to being something much more difficult for everybody to achieve.

  • I don't know the origin of the concept called "the American dream" but I've heard as well that it involved something like:

    3 bedroom house

    White picket fence

    2.2 kids

    1 dog

    2 cars in the driveway

    2 weeks of family vacation

    One breadwinner and one homemaker

Available to anyone who can work at the factory 40 hours a week. Basically "The Wonder Years" TV series in a nutshell.

But the idea that if you work hard you'll get ahead is ultimately the core of it. Some measurable, definable "hard work output" equals some obtainable reward, and harder work means even more reward. And really smart plus really hard work means even more opportunities are unlocked.

A lot of countries can't offer this or don't have a system of advancing through social glass ceilings or "castes".

So in that way it at least seems like the US still offers this although more and more difficult to achieve, connections are more crucial, or figuring out some trick (a side gig) is needed.

I know way too many people with a college degree that can hardly afford the rent.

  • This is a qualitative metric that may or may not be a reflection of the economy, but it sure seems like bad news. At least it's bad news for those who aren't coming from existing wealth or connections.

If most people believe that hard work - without needing a prior wealthy social circle - will not result in a commensurate lifestyle, they won't be as willing to put in the time for education, be willing to grind their early career, or be willing to borrow money believing that tomorrow will surely be better. That can easily start a downward cycle where there are fewer and fewer opportunities.

  • He definitely has more problems than most people in general, problems that would terrify a lot of regular souls. But he's also got a lot of help with those. Maybe it evens out.

I'm sure he's biting his nails about those criticisms while he's heliskiing in Telluride or crossing the Atlantic in his G6.

  • I made a comment that started with "the situation is complicated and neither side is blameless"

The first reply quoted that part and said if I didn't agree with their obviously correct position then I must be an ******** (insert some slur)

Ok, thanks for the chat bud.

  • Elon pays a high price each time he taps that "Post" button. But he seems like a guy who's happy to YOLO most of his actions.

The man seemingly has access to infinite cash reserves, so formerly known as Twitter won't stop working until he's bored of it. The comments wondering why it's not dead yet seem worn out by now.

Finally, the non-stop flow of articles and posts about the site prove its reach still punches way above it's weight class.

  • Don't comment on anything related to any conflicts immediately East of the Mediterranean lest you wish to be in an ad hominem "debate".

This problem drives valuable content away from the site, unless the lurkers up/down vote based on the value of a contribution (and not their personal opinion) or the mods step in, which is still seemingly rare.

  • I read that blog post about her. I thought it all sounded pretty wild - perhaps credible and perhaps not. If she really believes what she says, she needs to hire a lawyer and file charges if she thinks there's a crime.

Instead she's making these periodic accusatory posts containing big claims without evidence, which serves more as an antagonizer/libelous effort than one to achieve justice. It doesn't rise to the standard we expect to find guilt.

  • If you share a thought on a Biden/Trump thread, an Israel/Palestine thread, or another topic that attracts strong views, and your opinion is different than the hive, expect some vitriol and confrontation.

I've run into it while seriously looking for debate or productive conversation.

  • I learned how to identify propaganda in an English class in high school. Propaganda is such as evil sounding word, but Wikipedia calls it "communication that is primarily used to influence or persuade an audience to further an agenda"

That agenda might be widely accepted as correct - "killing innocent people is not good" - propaganda

Or of course it might be horrific - "xyz group of people is less worthy than everyone else and should be exterminated" - also propaganda

Or obvious - Posters that exclaim "Ice cream is delicious!" - still propaganda

It's crucial to recognize it quickly when material is influencing or persuading you, and to then give it a critical look. A good citizen will always be informed and able to recognize material that attempts to convince them to believe something as true.

  • I feel like this is Satya's wet dream. He woke up on Friday like normal and went to bed on Sunday owning what, 85% of OpenAI's top people? Acquisitions aren't usually that easy.

It seems obvious Sam would want to grow his company to infinity. That's what VC people do. The board expecting otherwise is strange in hindsight. Now they can oversee the slow, measured adoption of much smaller business while the rest of the team shoots for the stars.

Anyways, RIP y'all. Skynet launches next year.

  • It's been pretty stable and usable.

But has there been an increase in hiveminded threads and trolling?

At first it felt like dissenting opinions would lead to an informative discussion, but more and more having an unpopular opinion - or just stepping into the wrong thread - means someone resorting to insulting your mom. Ok, thanks Xbox live gamer.
