  • What's with all the back slashes? \ why not use a regular...

    ...line break?

  • While you're listing a ton of authors, for those of us (šŸ™‹) less well read it unfortunately doesn't convey much about which styles or what content you like.

So I'm going to take a few shots in the dark here.

Have you read many online novels? I would recommend Worm (parahumans.wordpress.com) for its sheer length as well as its very different take on what a world with super powers might look like. I would also recommend Ra (qntm.org) for its very interesting approach of treating magic as an established branch of engineering. Both get sorta wild near their ends, but imho they are very well written.

  • Moonlighting

    Muppet Show

    Hill Street Blues

First time around there was no option to skip them. Perhaps that's a contributing factor to why they're so good and re-watchable.

  • Oh yeah, definitely the Muppet Show as well! šŸ‘

  • I have never (before) read a single word of that bible, but may I bestow this upvote upon you for so casually and precisely bringing the requested reference.

  • Yes, I've been on Norwegian Dvorak since 2002 or so.

Biggest problem I've had is with keyboards and OS'es (cough šŸŽ) that don't support the Insert key, because (a) I cut my teeth on the DOS editor and (b) XCV are all over the place on this layout.

I will always use a proper full size keyboard if at all possible. Those 60% and whatnot are not for me (it's bad enough when they move the arrow keys).

Oh, and the languages insisting on ${} characters are a pain on any non US layout.

  • Are you only considering the hardware/price, or also the software side?

Which OS'es do you have experience with, and/or preference for?

The previous Mac I used was the first one they made with a colour screen (yes, I'm that old). Then last year I got a Mac laptop and I wanted to love it ... but man, that OS is getting in my way something fierce! To such an extent, in fact, that I switched over to my own (arguably inferior) Thinkpad that's been running Linux since forever.

  • Source?

Facial expression looks like OOTS but the rest is more, uh, I hesitate to say realistic...

  • Bluntly, where would Mozilla be without Google's funding?

    Gone, probably.

So while I agree that it is poisonous and there is something very wrong with Mozilla corporate structure, it is a necessary evil.

  • Correct, it is not.

  • The Swedes always did build things rather sturdily.....

  • I've been extremely fond of "Our Groceries" for many years. It strikes a sweet spot between features and simplicity of use, and the devs are very responsive and have added several features after my suggestions. Really the only downside right now is that it can't use the front facing camera on my wall mounted android tablet for scanning barcodes.

  • Preface: I know nothing about weapons except "point sharp end away from self".

The article has a video. The video shows drones dropping hand grenades at the jammers. The grenades go off (in a spectacularly disappointing fashion compared to what's depicted in movies, but that's beside the point) but don't seem to damage the jammers in any meaningful way. So, do the videos in fact show effective destruction even if it doesn't look like it?

Post script: I am not a Russian troll. Long live Ukraine! šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡¦šŸ––šŸ˜Ž I am merely not understanding the videos very well.

  • You shop daily or what?

A couple of litres of milk, perhaps ditto soda, some canned goods and frozen items ... easily 10 kg. Then add buying in bulk when there's special offers.

  • Have you tried carrying what equates to a toddler by one hand for 3km? Them plastic bag carrying handle bits are going to be digging into your fingers, friend. These days it won't matter so much of course because the fingers will be frozen anyhow.

Frankly I haven't used a shopping bag for years because I prefer collapsible cases (approx 40x60 cm) but economically those are even worse to carry farth than, say, 50m.

  • You could easily walk there, yes. But walking back again? With 15kg of groceries? That gets tiresome.

  • This is related to the "airplane on a treadmill" myth (go watch).

    Preservation of momentum

I wanna say it's incorrect, but really I'll say it's exaggerated. The man on the diving board is going to continue moving forwards just like the rest of the gear, he's not going to suddenly stop in relation to the road surface. However, he is going to be affected by wind resistance (which scales exponentially quadratically with speed) so he will need to make a good forward leap in order to not fall behind because of that. If he doesn't, he would be effectively jumping backwards - but not as far as depicted (unless the car is travelling really, really fast).

If the pool (and indeed, the man) were encased within an envelope to protect from that wind resistance, he would be entirely unaffected. So there.
