That reminds me of a distro I used (don't remember which one) that automatically applied a Christmas theme on grub every December. It was really cute, with a tux wearing a red hat (pun not intended) and walking around.

My same reaction. I bet most people don't even know the term.

In windows, we get the entire os as a single product, and we don't have a choice in anything. On linux, it's the contrary. The os if formed by several software distributed separately and joined together like lego pieces. Each linux distro is a compilation of software, a particular combination of lego pieces created and maintained by some group.

So, even the system graphical interface is a lego piece like any other, and each distro comes with one by default. Kde and gnome are some of the most popular interfaces. You can also replace almost any lego piece from the system by another of your choice, unlike on windows.

I hope I helped you understand linux a bit better. It all will become much more simple to you with a little more time. Be welcome to the community.

So far, people are being pretty reasonable. Most are recommending mint, ubuntu or similars, and no one recommended arch to someone with basic linux/computing skills. I have to say I'm impressed. Restored my faith in the community.

No worries about that, it was a bad wording. The company has stopped producing it, and that's it. Your cpu is fine, compatible with current software, and can serve you well for still a long time.

Corporations were so successful in promoting consumerism, that they already messed with us on a psychological level.

Congrats! It can be a difficult choice for some, because of the inconveniences it brings, but it's well worth it. We all need to ditch the big corporations and be free.

I believe creating life from non living parts available in nature has a great importance in proving that life could definitely have been originated like that. This would have several consequences to how we view the world.

To be fair, we can track abandoned oss because of open repositories, butcan we keep track or estimate the abandoned proprietary software? There are so many companies out there, small and big, abandoning some projects here and there.

I think it's a really cool addon, and not bloat at all. If we want the general public to ise linux based systems, we need every common functionality to be available without needing to open a terminal.
