Fedora actually supports skipping every other version. They point it at the docs:

. System upgrade is only officially supported and tested over 2 releases at most (e.g. from 38 to 40). If you need to upgrade over more releases, it is recommended to do it in several smaller steps (read more).

As for why I do that, the six months release cycle is too fast for me. I struggle a lot with things and end up living in a slow paced manner. In this case, the process is supported and I receive security updates normally, so I don't see a problem and it works fine for me. Besides, I have only one computer I use for everything, and I had problems with things not working properly after a distro upgrade in the past (it was with ubuntu, but I got a bit traumatized after that).

That site lists misskey as the second most popular fediverse network, but I never heard of it. I will check it out.

That's interesting. I usually skip each other fedora version, and will probably go from 39 to 41, but if there are improvements to battery life, maybe I will try it now.

This is very interesting, but makes me wonder if nonprofit initiatives will be able to host video sharing platforms in the fediverse, because of the server damends of it.

Maybe not directly, but there was a demand for "portable computers", a better input system for phones, better portable cameras, a way to readily access the internet anywhere, among several other things. The smartphone became popular so quickly because it concretized all of those latent demands into a single device.

The historical value alone it already a reason for it to become open source.

And that's exactly why I believe lemmy has the most potential to become the first fediverse project to become mainstream and challenge its big tech counterpart. The other ones face the entry barrier of a user not finding the influencers they want to follow, but this place has much fewer barriers to new users. For some, the experience is so smooth, that they won't ever touch reddit again.

And we don't even need to, because windows users already complain about windows all the time.

It was the only one I managed to install too. I recommended it, because it's easier for beginners and comes with a few optimizations for low end hardware.

It fells like we have some sort of natural difficulty to deal with choices, doesn't it? Even when choosing between equally good things, it isn't something we do so easily.

As someone not from the USA, looking at things as an external observer, it's really weird for me to see this increasing age-related hate. Instead of focusing on removing fascists, conservatives and the ultrarich from power, you're focusing on age as if it's the determinant factor on someone's character and intentions, and even promoting more age-related stigma. I even wonder if it's some sort of coordinated mass manipulation to prevent the increasingly radicalizing people from taking out the groups in power, by letting them fight against the older ones, while they prepare younger fascists to run the place, but that would be too much of a conspirational thought. Anyway, good luck with that, let's see how all this will develop.

On the other hand, landfills leak contaminants to the soil and water, produce a lot of methane, and probably other things too. I'd also argue that they give a illusion of a problem solved, and lead people and companies into not wanting to reduce trash production.

Did people at some point really believe that taking out all our trash out of sight and tossing them somewhere else would "save the planet"?

Wouldn't the direct sun exposure mess up things?

Syncthing has saved me a few times from hardware failure and no important data was lost. I wish I knew about it far earlier. Awesome software!

Out of curiosity, you have to open a port in the router for that to work, right? How does that work in the security aspect? Do you need to do some constant maintenance in your setup or something in order not to be vulnerable?

The problem I see with that thinking is that there are different levels of what can be considered unethical, but it usually gives the idea of "since it's all unethical, it's all the same". For example, buying something from a smaller company is usually much better than from a big one that uses slave labor.
