  • Everything is the lesser evil compared to Merz. That guy is psychopathic and absolutely ruthless, combined with his way too high intelligence. That guy is a menace to us all. There, I said it.

  • It is for the sole reason that it doesn't prevent any form of fake profiles or multi accounting.

There is even an argument that a rando profile with a fake mail adress that's not used anywhere else is not traceable to you, since the other information (IPS, Session data, etc) that's necessary to do that is not federated.

  • Yes, I know Yet, can you be more specific as to which parts of those laws (or better groups of laws, GDPR is not one single law as every EU member state does things slightly differently) Lemmy instances are at odds with?

  • Which "nation" are we talking about and which laws do you mean specifically?

  • It's not like Olaf "what is this Wirecard you keep bringing up?" Scholz wasn't up for some corporate bullshittery though

  • They could do classic web crawling, yes. But that is -super slow -easy to detect -easy to block -illegal for companies to do for the sake of selling shit in many places, since the users have not given you consent to use their data

I think they try to pull the WhatsApp stunt here: when you sign up to WhatsApp, WhatsApp will send your whole contact list to Meta and update it on every change in order to "connect the phone numbers on your phone with WhatsApp users" (or so they say). They have structured this process in a way that they're not at fault, but the user is. Since the user "sent" them the numbers, they are not the ones who need consent to use the data, the user needed that. Same with the fediverse. "No. We didn't steal any data without consent! Our users should have had that consent when they subscribed to technology@lemmy.world! The data was pushed to us from there, we ain't doin' nothin' wrong!"

  • I have used Joplin for a good while. I self hosted a little docker server for sync and off I went. There are paid sync plans available though. Nowadays I'm lazy and use the notes of my Nextcloud instance most of the time.

  • Shitposting aside: there is a valid point on there. Because we can't see our opposites in any discussion on the internet, we cannot take clues into account we otherwise might have. This leads to far-reaching misinterpretations. Imagine someone with a very weird and overly simplistic political stance they defend with tooth and nail. Now imagine that person to be some activist with a cap with political slogans on it. Okay, and now imagine the person to be not that, but a 15-year-old who just started to grasp the world around them but thinks they have it all figured out (puberty doing puberty things). Your reaction to either of them would be VASTLY different, wouldn't it. Imagine how many stupid internet fights would never have happened if it was known that one of the participants is a literal child that can't have a clue what they are talking about yet.

Yet, not knowing that we've been arguing with a child for the last hour and a half, we will leave the discussion with the impression that there are grown up people out there thinking childish bullshit. Don't get me wrong, there are those people, but they are not as frequent as one might guess from the internet.

  • Oh it is, but it is MINE and it bends to MY WILL! DELUSIONAL LAUGHTER

  • Screw fiddly digital calendars. They all have the same flaw most organizers have: they require you to stick to their system. I completely switched to a bullet journal and I am happy with that. The free form of it allows me to add or remove anything to my liking and so far this has worked wonders. It's of vital importance to do the daily migration to the next day in the evenings though.

  • Xenoblade is awesome! It blew my mind that sooo many really outstanding Switch games were in fact done by the same company!

  • Why even delete those communities? Just let'em have their three megabytes of database space that gets never used and be done with it.

  • Idk where this upheaval always comes from when a Youtuber decides to not work for a while. If Dan Smithson in 69 Boredom-Boulevard, Unspectacular-City, Illinois decides to take a break from freelance-work, no one bats an eye. But if a Youtuber does it, everybody loses their minds!

  • lemme post this on instagram, send it via whatsapp, upload it to imgur and have it recompressed by youtube real quick!
