  • You don't need to write to them. You do it on their site. 3 minutes effort and no more letters. I'm in favour of abolishing the license fee but refusing to just let them know is a weird hill to die on.

  • If you tell them you don't need a license they stop sending letters. I've never had this problem and I've not had a TV license at any time since I became an adult. I've only had to let them know when I've moved. No spam mail in ~15 years.

  • Inb4 this does jack shit to stop shoplifting.

Not because the government have an ulterior motive or because the tech is bad at identifying people, but because the police won't do anything as they're too busy being ambush rapists.

  • Okay, this is a nice sentiment but the money is long gone. It was spent when the equipment was made. It will either be scrapped or left to rust in a hangar.

  • This is a bit of a cynical take. $345m is not that much to the US government. It's not going to deprive anyone in the US. Plus, what are homeless people going to do with military equipment?

If it was $345bn I'd agree but this is barely even going to register on the accounting spreadsheet.

  • Exactly, they can coexist, so I'm not sure why people are so against having both. Content discovery is likely to be be the biggest barrier for entry for new social media platforms, because if you don't have a reason to stay, why would you? It's pretty much the primary obstacle to getting people away from Reddit or Twitter and onto an alternative.

  • I don't see why having chronological feeds can't be paired with some more generic sorting or filtering systems. Nobody would be obligated to use either, you could just pick the one you want.

I get people want to see specifically what they subscribe to, and nothing else (looking at you, facebook). But I don't see why people hate the idea of others being able to discover new content. Reddit had default subs for a long time, Twitter has trending topics, Mastodon could really do with something similar to help noobs get on-boarded.

And no - there's no way I'm wading through the shit fountain that is Mastodon's all posts tab on the off chance I find one interesting post. If you don't already have interesting follows then it feels like there's no point.

  • Large open source projects like Signal don't really rely on individual donations, but instead survive off wealthy supporters or sponsors.

  • Like Did he do it on purpose?

I think this gives him credit where it isn't due 😂

Personally, I think he's just a magic blend of incompetent, arrogant, and in over his head. Large companies are slow moving for a reason and we're seeing why in real time.

  • A preferable fate

  • Type 1 here.

    It's an autoimmune disease.

  • It depends where you go, surely?

I've met a fair number of numpties on Reddit but I've never had anyone tell me neckbeards are an oppressed group until I came to Lemmy 😂

Jokes aside, it's easy to avoid toxic people on here since they usually announce themselves loudly. It's easy to block users, communities, or even servers if you don't want to see something.

  • All this over a meme...

You might be booksmart, not that you're demonstrating it here, but you certainly have the emotional intelligence of a toddler. If you need to walk on eggshells around people, it would be because you're a vapid bellend and they're sick of your attitude.

The way you judge "everybody else" as stupid, as if intelligence is a good way to determine the value of a person, is frankly disgusting. It shows your contempt for other people.

If everywhere you go smells like shit, check your shoes. Now go do some deep thinking about that.

  • That's a bit of an arbitrary figure. Also wealth isn't really money as much as it is things.

Take a house, for example. You only really need one. The monetary value of the house depends on a few factors, but it's primary value is that it gives you shelter. It probably fluctuates in monetary value but the actual value doesn't change. If you cap wealth based on monetary value, how do you deal with homes in different places that are valued differently? I think it's going to be more complicated than it seels at first glance.

Assuming you mean dollars, since everyone on the internet is American. 10mil seems like a lot all together. But if you had to feed your entire family for the rest of your life on 10mil you might struggle, depending on where you live.

Maybe you mean 10mil income per year and not overall wealth. That's different, but I can understand this. A progressive tax system could impose a cap of sorts but tax avoidance (the legal kind) would render it useless.

I don't have any answers, just felt like continuing the thought train.

  • It's own form of bigotry haha! My sides... Yep, that's right. You're the most oppressed. Right up there with gamers and Christians.

Okay mate, I'm gonna leave you be before you burst a blood vessel.

  • You're taking this way too personally lol

Being intelligent isn't the joke. It's putting on the facade of being well read that so many nerdy 20 somethings do.

Society isnt saying don't be smart. It's saying be less of a sweaty douchebag. You can be nerdy and fun to be around. It's not mutually exclusive.

If my comment destroys your intellectual curiosity, then you never had any.

  • Exactly. It's taking the piss out off wannabe "deep thinkers" who've speed ran philosophy 101 videos on Youtube. Being well read isn't the joke. The joke is the neckbeards who have to smugly let everyone know that they read a Wikipedia article.

Ironically, this stereotype probably fits most of the ones who are kicking off. Hell, it's essentially a profile of me. 10 years ago I was that guy saying "hey have you heard about iambic pentameter?". That's why I laughed so hard lmao

  • Do we do flairs here yet? 😂

  • That sounds like a good way to make people go back to Reddit

  • Yes, but Apple and Meta have many more users and much more clout. As much as I don't like them, these public statements of intent are needed if this is to be defeated.

  • Personally I don't use Netflix but I think this should serve as a reminder that the internet isn't a good barometer for real life opinions. You'd have thought Netflix was about to Blockbuster itself if you went off Reddit comments alone.

Anyway, the real question is how bad is their churn rate. If their numbers jumped up but only last a few months before cancelling, then this isn't really that great. They really want those numbers to stick.
