  • It sad really, I visited a friend there and theres some really good people there trying to change things politically but constantly the govenrment or the courts change the bar to defeat their efforts. They need someone to do whatever Ben Wikler did to pull Wisconsin away from its anti representative and gerrymandering efforrs.

  • Yeah as far as I know China still buys data from the US and I don't think anyone is trying to stop that, I'm not sure how much differnt the data they collect themselves would be. Banning it from government devices was definetly warranted, but I still dont know how the US would enforce the civilian ban if Tiktok didn't voluntarily shut down the service as they plan to on the 19th. Also in the court case the US shared sercret evidence neither the public nor tiktoks attorney's were allowed to see. I'm not keen on trusting evidence they intentionally hide when they still allow our data to end up in China anyway.

  • Considering Musk is a tech Baron, kind of. "Tech baron leaks DMs of user on tech platform he owns." Just doesn't have the same click bait factor. Social media remains to be technology, you can probably find a more exclusive tech sub where it's banned, but under the massive tech umbrella it's likely the most universally understood modern technology.

  • Thats what I mean about the optics. We should know by now more than most are low information voters. They're going to remember a Biden WH pushing the ban and a Trump WH saving their favorite app. Even independent of Trumps rhetoric that's going to be the take away by many.

  • More shitty optics for Democrats imo. A poorly thought out ban that some question if it could even be enforced over something the younger generation loves is now posed to be reversed by Trump. This costs the party youth voters, probably another case of Dems taking a demographic for granted. In 2 years the dems will wonder why the youth vote didnt save them at midterms and all but their most stalwart apologists will laugh at them.

    edit: Schumer agrees

  • A similar phenom happened with TV, once there were hundreds of channels people started leaning heavily on nostalgia. I think it just that an overwhelming amount of options makes the whole experience more taxing on executive function and you can't help but notice the garbage you filter thought because you just have to filter through so much more of it. I guess advertising plays a hand in the levels of exposure too. It's why it felt like when you were a kid a good game just fell on your lap and now gaming being more visible than ever you still feel like when you find one it's a hidden gem among coal.

I think if you looked more or in different places you'd find more you like.

  • Its so wild to me that its practically illegal to be trans in like 1/3rd the US and we see US social media with histories of passing data to cops starting to track womens cycles in anti abortion states and after all that people still think China having your data is wors than known election interferer Zucc having it.
