  • No individual is more powerful than the state. That's sort of the point of the state. Therefore, people who value freedom, like myself, are absolutely concerned with the decisions of the state and about the consequences of living a life out-of-line with the powers that be.

To use a hyperbolic example (and I fully acknowledge that is is hyperbolic, but I want to demonstrate a point), you were free to denounce Stalin and go to the Gulag. Nobody sewed up your mouth and prevented you from doing so. As you would aptly say, there are consequences.

  • Honestly I use brave from time to time as my backup browser and I have never noticed the difference.

I think the performance issue would not be related to loading simple pages. It seems like it would be more noticeable when running load-demanding web apps.

  • It's fast enough on any remotely modern hardware.

Personally I love the ability to still pimp it out with style sheets.

And yeah, Mozilla has so many, many problems. In many ways they have become Google's pet, IMO. But most importantly they are not Google.

I think when Chrome came out Google was still a cool, hip company and Chrome fixed a lot of issues Firefox had. I used it for years. So they managed to become the normie cultural default. These people are hard to change habit-wise.

I could be wrong though. Just sort of thinking out loud.

  • Great answer. I do use systemd boot on one of my systems as well. It isn't exactly systemd itself is it? Simply a boot loader packaged as part of the general systemd boot suite, right?

  • Damn. I'm much more of a craft beer person, but this is sad. Is just marking it down not an option?

Edit: Oh, never mind. They want to stop prices collapsing. Yeah, sounds like France. Forever bailing out their farmers 🙄

  • I think

    1. Most people are actually mostly reasonable most of the time because they don't want to die or be seriously injured
    2. Generally then, your scenario is unrealistic
    3. If it were true, that most people were just dying to get brain damage in car accidents we could probably deal with it in a non-authoritarian way

Consider the billions per month alcohol and tobacco cost public health systems. We still let people do these things. Frankly I'd very much be in favor of taxing smokers more if they wanted to use the public health system.

The reality is, you just like a more controlling society as I like a more free one.
