  • I really enjoyed this article and had no idea that the Tamaulipan forest was even a thing. It's encouraging to see that there are efforts to reforest the area; I hope that the areas not yet seeded aren't repurposed for development. It seems like building our urban centers in the RGV more densely, perhaps rezoning single family for mixed use, could be helpful to prevent urban sprawl there, as Texas is notorious for that. I'm encouraged to support the efforts there, and hope this chaos of current disinvestment in our climate mitigation/adaptation is only a tiny blip in our future of stewarding the lands.

We really should be doing more to get kids outdoors to see what it could be - get them to nature preserves, into environmental education programs, and internships that get them into tree planting, soil and water testing, and get them excited to learn about the natural world before we lose more of it. I've seen with my own eyes how impactful those can be on the trajectory of their careers, and it makes for an incredible, well-rounded experience for them that can build lasting friendships with humans and the ecosystem alike.

  • Just to reiterate for anyone reading, the section you want to focus on is Workforce, and yes - what are we going to do about this list? My creative resources are depleted atm but I know there's others here with solutions.

  • Cyclists have known this and promoted this idea for years. There's just so few protections for them in the legal system in practice, and on the flip side, so few consequences for drivers that harm cyclists and pedestrians. That's one of the things that keeps people away that are even remotely interested in cycling as transportation. That's not to mention the lack of interest/funding in cycling infrastructure.

  • You're at least making up for my inability to step away from it atm. I wouldn't have bought into the environment had it not been for my partner, and work of course. I grew up on PS and PC gaming, just recently started using Xbox. Damn it.

  • I'd like to think I'm pretty decent at sticking to boycotts, but holy hell, my work platform is Microsoft and their products, and I run gaming servers for my friends online and play through game pass. This is going to be so hard for people to step back and not use their platforms and software if they're in it like me. Not sure how to proceed.

  • I'll reiterate - this admin is f'd. No one deserves to be abducted and held without due process. With this admin, it's always human rights abuse first, ask questions later, and there are no exceptions to the rule.

  • We might not have them as you see them today, but there is building science that is centuries old that works with the environment to have architectural solutions that don't even rely on electricity to retain heat or cool a space. There's also the more modern passive house design. As someone born and raised in a hot climate like you mentioned, had we created a built environment like this instead of crippling ourselves to use fossil fuels and refrigerants with high global warming potential, we wouldn't be where we are today. I agree that a/c changed the world. That change could have been a much more positive one had we taken a more practical approach!

  • Holy f. This piss poor administration is showing just how incompetent they truly are. Everyone will suffer for their actions. I had no idea just how much the US gained in having peaceful relations with traditional allies, and so many Americans have been blissfully unaware just how f'd that all has become in record time. Way to go, a holes.

Reading that Denmark lost just as many soldiers post-9/11 as the US did, I'm in shock as to how idiotic our education system is that it wasn't highlighted how brave contributions allies have provided over the years has helped us, and of course not just in war time. As an American, I'm truly sorry to the rest of the world for not knowing the great extent of solidarity and kindness allies have shown over the years. Of course, I understand why that's likely no longer going to be the case.

  • This is horrifying to hear. How long ago was this? Of course it could be "just last week" given how these same issues persist today. A lot of what you mentioned resonates with me on how women struggle (especially women of color) to be taken seriously for how talented they are. I'm currently working with one who is a scientist as well, whose manager refuses to compensate her for her time at events representing the organization. Worse, we have a telecommuting policy that is organization wide, but she has yet to be allowed to work from home once, while our new hire in our team was able to do so right away and is of 'lower rank' than her. It makes no sense that we still have constant double standards in operation. When I mentioned to my scientist colleague that her time is valuable and that she should be compensated for event time, she cried. I'm the type of person that stubbornly ensures that I'm not played by double standards when I can identify them, but she's the type that doesn't want to make waves. I'm trying to find a way to help her without making her work life more complicated but it's a struggle.

Thank you for sharing this story, and I'm sorry for your losing such an incredibly talented co-worker.

  • Admittedly I know little about journalism as a profession and practice, but I feel this is an absolute spot on take. So much of what's happening is going to shake up pretty much everything. Here's hoping it wakes enough people up to mobilize for radically good change that puts the working class first.

  • Same. I stopped using non-Beehaw social media at the end of last year and haven't looked back. I barely respond to texts as well. My social battery is pretty weak these days and I can only take so much irl interaction.

  • Neat! Sounds promising. Funny, I was just telling one of my friends about G4 (the channel) today. I miss that 2000s/early 2010s vibe. Everything just went to major commercialization too fast and it took so much fun out of the hobby. I think gamers are recognizing this nowadays and trying to claw their way out of it and this feels like a step in that direction.

  • It's all so confusing when you put what you interpret to be "good" out into the world, only to be shit on, chastised, or ignored after the fact. Reading what Kwakigra responded to you with, and remembering the examples of Pals coming together and celebrating community despite the horrors they face, I'm reminded of a cliché - those who mind don't matter, and those that matter don't mind. In your struggles, despite them or because of them, you can still find community. I count myself as grateful to see your continued contributions here, and it sounds like others feel similarly. You've probably opened my eyes to a number of things that enrich my life in these two short years here. I just hope that this random Internet person (me) can somehow show thanks for your existence. Does this count for much? Maybe not, but maybe. All I know is that you seem to be a positive influence here, and I appreciate you.

  • I'm not going to try and find the "right" thing to say because I'll surely fail. What I can say is that I've lost two people to suic*de, one a family member that I was just getting to know in my adult years and we were getting along so well, discovering we had lots in common. My heart hurts to see you in this position, and it hurts to be reminded that I didn't pay attention to the signs that my family member would be taking their life upon reflecting on events that led to that day. What I hope to convey in this is that I see you, and I recognize that you're reaching out. I don't know if any of us have the answer, but I'll be damned if I make the mistake of not recognizing when I could bring even a modicum of grace and kindness to my fellow human. I'm sorry this shit show of a timeline is so damn shitty. You surely deserve better.

  • Hard agree. It's times like these that I look for any humans that understand and show compassion. I'm really lucky to have met gentle souls with personalities that wear like battle-tested armor. I do my best to learn from the many hardships we've all faced and try to be the mycelium that brings us together with a shared appreciation for a simple, equitable lifestyle and community. Much easier said than done.
