  • We can still take steps to reverse this, and there is a grassroots movement supporting walkable/micro mobility infrastructure. I've seen municipalities do studies partnered with nonprofits (in the US) which has resulted in daylighting intersections, raised bump outs, and safe, separate biking lanes. It just takes forever because all the people that think this will increase their drive time in personal vehicles would never fathom biking or walking. This country needs an attitude adjustment and a walk back from reliance on emotional support vehicles. I've biked in rain and snow, and it's so much more fun when you aren't fearful for your life because some impatient car brain can't wait to save 0.5 seconds on their commute and would rather run you over.

  • I think this comic is supposed to be based in the future.

Seems pretty relevant now as well. Just ask the brave environmental activists with RICO charges in Atlanta, for starters.

    RIP Tortuguita

  • Truth. Furthermore, accidents involving a bike and a car have mostly happened because of a lack of infrastructure and options for safe travel on bikes. Public residential streets, for example, are for all modes of transportation, not just cars. Car brains are hysterical and don't like that, and my life has been threatened many times while riding my bike on residential streets. I even had an older woman match my speed, roll down her window, and say "Next time I see you I'm running you over." Cyclists do absolutely nothing to deserve this, and even if they're holding up traffic, it's no excuse for homicide.

  • I'd like to point out that according to what's reported, they're trying to frame it as a "mental health" episode, where it appears it is not. The Airman was sending a clear message of support for Palestine, and I imagine, demonstrating a complete disgust with Israel and his leadership in continuing to fuel a genocide.

I sincerely doubt US officials or the military cares, and they're going to double down on the individual's "mental health" as being the culprit and source of problems rather than the infinite harms this genocide has on Palestine and those around the world with sight and soul.

  • Very excited about this! Now take this framework, apply the tools and methods they suggest on their website to your city, grab some friends and make some signs/slogans, and go liven up city hall with a demonstration! And if you're really next level, advocate for safe and separate bike lanes as well. We need pedestrian dignity and micro-mobility options built in to every part of dense cities.

  • Precisely this. People are taught by the wealthy class to devalue certain jobs because they are deemed "lesser than," and that the people that occupy those jobs are "not worthy" of a living wage, benefits, a stable living situation, respect, and more. This systematic dehumanization prevents us from realizing the true harms that working class people of all backgrounds are experiencing. Of course, the harms are compounded if you identify as a woman, a person of color, a queer person, as having a disability, or if you don't speak the native language.

Environmental Justice is what we need - a sense of community, mutual support, and a collective realization of past harms that have been baked into every policy, from the local to the federal level. These harmful policies have to be disrupted and dismantled, which can only be possible through education and action. The more people that engage in collective action under the banner of Environmental Justice, the better chance we have of really making meaningful, positive change.
