  • Are we just gonna not talk about OP using 10/8? šŸ˜‚

  • If it keeps up it’s going to someone is going to be making 3 envelopes….

  • I thought it was just in my head that the battery wasn’t lasting as long after updating. Glad to know I’m not alone! šŸ˜‚

  • That's horrible, poor dude should just have lived his truth. Damn same he felt that this was the only way forward/out.

  • That's really neat! Thanks!!

  • I’ve found nextcloud to be slow too when dealing with 10s of GB or more of data. Anything less that seems to be fine. I don’t use it myself for that reason.

  • The synology stuff is neat but I personally wouldn’t use it. There’s a lot of stuff that is abstracted away from you and when you run into a problem it’s not easy to resolve. Plus you’re already running things that can do more.

If you want something like it casaos would be worth a look. You just take a base install of Debian 12 and run their script on it. You’ll get the ease of use that synology has without it fighting you when you want to do something different.

Once you have that going it’s just as simple as getting next cloud going and anything else you want. Which is just one click in the webui. It can manage all the containers you have running on the Fedora vm too. So your reverse proxy, blocky, etc shouldn’t be a problem to run on there.

Unless you REALLY want the synology apps and stuff like that. If that’s the case they go with xpenoloy.

  • I use RHEL/Rocky 8 for all my home server stuff mostly because i like my home server stuff boring and stable.

Since you were considering TrueNAS, maybe consider something like Debian/Ubuntu + CasaOS. That will give you a good base and webui to work with.

It's not going to be a lean as it could be but it should give you enough guard rails and hand holding to get you started. Then you can figure out the rest of your needs from there. If you don't like it you can always wipe it and try again with something else.

I'd stay away from the TrueNAS, Unraid, Proxmox, etc. mostly due to your hardware and that it's your first home server.

They're not bad at all, but a lot of the stuff is abstracted from you and since you're more than likely going to want to tinker with it having a standardized base install with a distro that has a lot of documentation is going to be very helpful.

  • I haven't had the time to look into NixOS... but damn that's just fucking magical...

  • I’m sure it’s going to be something like house arrest. I doubt they will be allowed to go further than that. Mostly because they’re going to have a bunch of law suits launched trying to find some judge that will grant a stay somewhere even if it’s not proper for them to do so. In the end it will fail but it will just motivate his base even more.

Prison I’m guessing would be a minimum security facility. Most likely with marshals protection.

But I’m not even close to an expert so I could be completely wrong!

  • OK, I know this post is pretty anti-HP which is totally fair, but honestly just stop buying the cheap inkjet printers.

^ THIS!! SOOOO MUCH THIS ^

Inktank or Laser is the way to go!

If you want something that will last forever get an inexpensive laser printer off of ebay.

Even if it's only USB most routers/NAS offer some way of sharing it.

Hell, if you're running a Linux NAS you can give it AirPrint via CUPS and then everything else will "just work" with it.

  • IANAL though I thing if Trump is off of the ballot in CO then that could set some precedent to be referred to that would make it easier in other states (and law suits) to follow

  • I guess it largely depends on the instance and user. Federation allows things to talk but users and their home instances still have ownership of the data. So if a user removes it it’s gone. If the instance goes away it’s gone.

At least that’s my basic understanding. I haven’t had the time to really explore how everything works and do a deep dive. So if I’m wrong someone please correct me!

  • I’m not so sure it’s a dangerous path. There should be limits on what people can say.

I’m saying this as someone who up until the pandemic was very much against limits in ANY speech. There should be consequences for spreading hate and misinformation.

I’m aware that it’s a VERY dangerous and slippery slope too.

have no idea what the right amount of limits even looks like. I’m not an expert by any stretch of the imagination. What I do know is that what we have now isn’t working.

  • Likewise! Once I finally started making real money I tried to buy software I pirated early on. Even if I don’t currently use it.

  • Thanks for being upfront and clear about things. I know it’s not easy.

If you don’t have anyone on the team who has great soft skills I’d suggest you put out a call for ā€œcommunity managers.ā€ Mostly for things like this.

Keep up the great work! I’m glad to see how everything is coming together. šŸ»

  • It’s not hard to read and it’s pretty clear. IMHO it’s better than most ELUA text I’ve seen.

Besides with the scale at which this site is growing it would be STUPID of them NOT to put up something like this. At the bare minimum it’s protecting their asses from liability if/when someone decides to sue them. They can’t point to that text and say this is what/why we took the actions we did.

  • Idk, it seems pretty clear.

If you got a permaban then you’re not welcome.

The world temporary isn’t used there. There would be nothing to stop someone from just making a new account in either case. But if it were obvious someone was trying to get around that clause then it would be more than enough of a reason to swing the ban hammer.
