It's open source, but I wouldn't call it a fediverse alternative. But it's still a good slack alternative.

Those still exist. You can still find some using a search-engine.

If you want some cheep good hardware, look into getting one with good custom rom support. That will get rid of the trash the OEM will put on there.

At this point it's easier / more comfortable than a windows install. No waiting between steps, no unnecessary options, easier disk layouts.
