  • Consumer Reports created an iOS and Android app that collects your account information for a bunch of businesses and provides the option of sending "do not sell" requests to them en-mass. It also helps you delete unwanted accounts and stay up to date on which businesses are doing what with your data.

Not bad, but it all depends on how much you trust Consumer Reports. It appears they have a fairly good reputation as a consumer advocacy non-profit, but I didn't do much deep dive research.

Ideally, this is something FTC would have a hand in for consumers in the United States -- improving EULA comprehension. I can imagine a world where businesses and applications have EULAs with ESRB-like ratings or tags: "location data", "purchase history", "3rd party data exports", "X year retention" to show what you're agreeing to. I'd love to brainstorm on how else that could change.

  • Junk email + VPN, but I've found that most free wifi services like this explicitly try to inhibit the functionality of mobile VPN clients.

  • What’s the collective noun for a group of Han Solos? A falcon? A scruffy?

  • This is a fine window into the lived experience of being trans at this moment in the United States. Though the guidance to "shout your trans-ness" is going to be met with a bit skepticism. It's pretty tiring to hear that, once again, it's the job of the victimized individual to take actions and embrace risks of personal safety to be treated with basic human dignity.

I'm one of those who are out and unable to hide it. I can't help but take those risks merely by existing. I acknowledge the tremendous support I would receive if my gender-expansive siblings who are able to make their way in the world as their lived genders were to take this author's recommendation. But I wouldn't be so bold as to insist upon in.

We support each other in the ways we can, and whatever support is offered is enough.

  • I think that might be the point. If their audiences were waning, this is probably their gamble at a last hurrah. A last ditch attempt to pull in an audience before they’re shuffled off into celebrity podcast purgatory.

  • “working to create a national rent-by-mail service”

  • Indeed. I even sense a hint of franchise establishment. And you know what? That’s fine. Pine is right up there with Daniel Radcliffe on making A+ creative choices.

  • Landscape With Invisible Hand (2023)

It’s a satire about a young artist coming to terms with major societal changes after a semi-benevolent alien invasion. And do yourself a favor: don’t watch the trailers. Drop into this one cold.

  • I’ve been using Piped links in another community for trailers. It seems that there’s something wrong with the main Piped portal (piped.video) after you play the first few videos; failures with those 4-digit error codes that are not explained. I tried searching through the Piped repo for them as well and couldn’t find any info about them.

Staying on the same portal, I’ve had some luck using new private browsing windows and fresh vpn connections. But the thing that’s worked best is using other instances ( https://github.com/TeamPiped/Piped/wiki/Instances ). This one has been working best for me: https://pipedapi.syncpundit.io/

  • Next thing I know, you’re going to ask me how Moses could suppose his toes are roses. Cuz one might suppose that erroneously that anyone’s toes could be posies of roses as Moses supposes his toes to be.

  • What makes you think I haven’t? I mentioned learning something new, and provided a citation.
