  • I was having a blast playing through Combined Arms recently. It's a mod (or revamp) of OpenRA which provides a story an campaign that involves factions from all C&C and RA games, including the Scrin.

And best of all: Since it's based on OpenRA it's completely free. I highly recommend check8ng it out. It's well balanced, it involves a cool story, and while I'm mostly a tiberian dawn kind of guy, I'm sure it'll appeal to Red Alert fans as well.

Ever wanted to see how the mammoth tank fares against a tesla coil? Or a scrin carrier against a Yak? Well now you can try it.

  • No. The joint isn't threaded, it's a slew ring. Think of it like a wide diameter ball bearing (rod bearing? Pin bearing? Not sure about the English word..) with some extra locking mechanisms to hold the top part in place.

What happened here is most likely a damaged or worn slew ring.

Source: I helped replace the busted slew ring on a ships crane once.

  • Hugh Grant. I'm sure he's both a wonderful person and a great actor, but... he seems to have gotten typecast into a certain type of movie that I just cannot stand. He's become a litmus test for movies I should just not bother watching.

  • That too. The entire stream was flooded with trolls. And some of them really struck a nerve. I don't remember the exact words, but I'm sure "You can be as successful as you want, but your insecurities will never go away. That's why you will always feel alone. It will never get better." ...hit home.

  • Printers. There is no excuse for (consumer) printers to be as shitty as they are.

There are reasons, but none of them are excuses: If patent hell wasn't a main obstacle put in place by the large printer manufacturers, I am sure open source hardware alternative would've forced industry improvements ages ago.

  • Yup. My ear canals are much wider than the average q tip, so I don't really use them as plungers, they're more for scraping the sides.

I am terrified of losing my hearing or otherwise damaging my ears (long story, not that interesting), so I simply refuse to use them as far in as I safely could.

  • No. Not all energy in the oceans cause waves.

Let's say you magically dampen all of the surface waves... there will still be plenty of energy in the ocean, which eventually will cause the surface to move.

As a simplified example, the Atlantic currents are really strong, moving in a figure of eight between south America and scandinavia. However, most of it happens near the ocean bottom.

In some spots near the coast of Brazil this current is strong enough to cause anchored surface buoys to have wakes, while it can be perfectly calm a few km away. But the currents are still there, just much much deeper. The amount of energy involved in this Atlantic dynamo is extreme.

Source: Trying to accurately position subsea sensors at 1800 meters depth in the Campos basin is fucking annoying.

  • Yup, I've made a habit out of doing this. I want to know if it's a new position or if I'm replacing someone. The latter isn't necessarily problematic, but I want to know if the role has been filled by someone before who had coworkers who are used to how my predecessor did things.

  • This just sounds like seeding an encrypted torrent with extra steps.

I'm noping out in this until I have a plausible explanation of what the data actually is, because I'm not hosting people's CSAM collection for them.
