  • I live under singlepayer health care. I like it, but it does have its downsides. For example, let's say you have something really severe going on, and you'd like to try a hail Mary. Well, you can't, as the only treatments that are available to you are whatever treatments have been deemed effective and reasonably safe by the regulatory agency. Experimentation, in lack of a better word, is a no-go.

I never experienced this as a problem myself, but I can easily imagine that someone could.

So I think the best is to have single payer available to everyone, but with private for profit doctors available if you need or want something a little more unorthodox and you have the means to pay for it.

EDIT: Seeing as I may have come off as a bit gloomy, I think I should list why I wouldn't want it any other way.

    • My dad had cancer. Chemo and everything covered.
    • My kid broke his arm this spring. The only expense was me buying a sandwich while they inserted a titanium rod into his arm.
    • Same kid has ADHD. I can show up to any pharmacy in the country and fetch his meds (stock pending) without paying anything.
    • His brother also has ADHD and poor eyesight on one eye. Meds and glasses covered.
    • All of my kids were born in a hospital at no expense.
    • I didn't learn until last year what the hell "copay" is, and the more I learn about it, the more thankful I am that it's not something I have to think about.

  • A friend and I usually call it "duck it" or "ducking it" when talking to each other. To others it's "googling".

Fun side note: Someone here on lemmy a while back was having a fit about something I said because it was from one of Google services, and while he's right that Google is evil and invasive and all that I had to chuckle when they told me to Google one specific thing on the matter. "Don't use Google, Google it for more info."

  • I don't remember where (sweden, I think?), but there was this zoo with a chimp who was infamous for throwing rocks at guests that annoyed him. He was also observed collecting a small pile of rocks in the morning that he could use as ammo. So not only was he a decent thrower, but he was also making physical preparation to a negative emotion that he was expecting to feel later in the day - a trait previously not associated with animals.

  • Insecure about crowd size in 2016, 2020, and 2024. With all the sexual harassment and rape accusations I was convinced he was eqipped with both dick and balls, but I'm not so sure anymore seeing as he's an insecure manlet.

  • The epic showdown between mannequin and womannequin was the best part of the Stair Wars prequels. Everyone at the cinema knew beforehand that Mannequin would be maimed by The Floor is Lava, but everyone wanted to see how it happened.

  • I mainly used irssi via ssh to connect to IRC back in the day. And one side effect of right clicking in the putty window is that it automatically pastes. And if whatever you paste contains a newline, it gets submitted to whatever channel or person you have focused.
