  • Koichiro Ito was the producer, NOT the director who is famous for creating those movies. He collaborated with the studio, he did not write or direct the films. Please do not destroy and undermine these beautiful works of art over a single credited contributor who did not create the films.

Further, he was only arrested in February of 2024 so the studio hasn't even had an opportunity to turn down future collaboration with him.

  • Troll mode: Rip the first 5 minutes of each movie then splice in Rick Astley

Troll activist mode: Rip the first 5 minutes of each movie then splice in Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion live reading

Troll comedian mode: Rip the first 5 minutes of each movie then splice in Monty Python's The Life of Brian

Activist mode: Find a set of movies to rename that teach about the harm religion has caused

Ethical absolutist mode: Refuse to host them, and explain why

Non-confrontational familial support mode: Give Mom a unique user and make the god movies only accessible to that user

In all seriousness it depends on what your priorities are. Is it more important to you to provide judgement-free support to your mom so she knows she can rely on you, or is it more important to try to reduce harm in the world by deplatforming harmful media? Or maybe it's more important to try to teach your mom what's wrong with those movies and you can come to an arrangement where she can watch those movies only if she agrees to watch movies you choose in equal amounts (since you can track it) to counteract the propaganda?

What is most important to you?

  • "Cool story. Still murder." I have really serious problems with how FISA has been used in the past. I usually could go either way on authorizing state surveillance but it has been abused too much for me to be comfortable keeping it around in its current form

As far as trump is concerned, even a broken clock is right twice a day

  • There is no question that most myths and legends were originally an attempt to convey facts, theories, or guesses into the future.

Humans are built to be pattern matching machines and prediction engines; it's one of the big survival traits we developed through evolution and we're better at it than any other species we know of.

BUT objectively speaking we were still really, really bad at it. Yet that doesn't stop us from trying.

So we tend to do the best we can with the information we have available at the time.

As others have said, "physics" - and science in general - is by definition immutable. It is the thing that can be tested with specific predictions that always turn out to be correct. If I can perform an experiment today, and you can perform the same experiment 100 years from now, and (adjusting for environmental factors and measurement accuracy) we get the same results, and we can repeat that over and over, that's science.

But our understanding, our knowledge of it, can change as you say. That doesn't make physics less true, it just make our knowledge of and ability to describe physics less accurate.

We can trace so many stories - including modern religions - to origins that attempt to explain our limited observations in the past. They were our best effort at matching patterns and predicting outcomes in the world around us. And the inaccuracies, the limitations don't mean we should stop believing the things we think we understand today.

It just means that we must recognize new information when it arrives as testable data, and incorporate it into our current understanding, relegating the wisdom of the past to history.

  • white savior trope

I and other white allies literally stood in front of police with crowd control weapons when my black friends yelled 'white shield' during the BLM protests in Seattle but tell me more 🤣 I'm nobody's savior but I do know how to use my privilege for the benefit of others

This would hold water if they didn't go out of their way to say it was race-motivated abuse.

So the options are "don't reference the racism at all" or "name the victim"? Fuck outta here with that shit.

  • No, this is how you properly show solidarity.

An attack against a single cast member is an attack against the entire company.

They are saying "it doesn't matter who they attacked. Racism against our cast member is racism against us all because we are a family that stands with a single purpose, speaks with a single voice."

And if it only redirects 1% of the aggression away from the intended target and towards the white cast members instead, then it is worth it.

That's how you be a good ally

  • Right? Waymo is already several times safer than humans and tesla's garbage, yet municipalities keep refusing them. Trust is a huge problem for them.

And yes, haters, I know that they still have problems in inclement weather but that's kinda the point: we would be much further along if it weren't for the unreasonable hurdles they keep facing because of fear created by Tesla

  • The shame of it is that despite this limitation LLMs have very real practical uses that, much like cryptocurrencies and NFTs did to blockchain, are being undercut by hucksters.

Tesla has done the same thing with autonomous driving too. They claimed to be something they're not (fanboys don't @ me about semantics) and made the REAL thing less trusted and take even longer to come to market.

    Drives me crazy.

  • "Reason" and "morals" are unfortunately not synonymous :(

If your morals say that killing to reduce the costs of accommodating disabilities is okay then your reason will dictate you start killing people in wheelchairs.

This is honestly why I feel like us liberals fail so often: you can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into. The position "white people are superior" - the starting point from which many of these heinous behaviors begin - isn't about logic and reason. So trying to use logic and reason to explain why killing minorities is bad won't work. We act like if we could just explain how unreasonable they're being everything would be okay. But that's not how it works.

You have to address the rotten foundations first. Otherwise they will continue to spout off what sounds like reason if you just accepted their premise.

Reject the premise, not the logic used to get from the premise to the behavior

  • So, you don't mention anime or anything and thus the instance I run, https://urusai.social, probably isn't a great fit BUT....

Our feeds are absolutely bursting at the seams with the type of content you say you enjoy. I recommend checking out our public timeline and looking at the servers of the users that show up there. A lot of them are very geeky: https://urusai.social/public

  • I'm genuinely not looking for an argument. My original comment was "yup, this isn't for me, because it's too much time/effort". It only became an argument of sorts when person after person came in to try to tell me why I was wrong for feeling that way?

Like, I get it. There are different variants and options and arch is mostly for people who want to tinker.

But my original comment was literally just "well, this post confirms what I suspected: arch probably isn't for me because I don't have the time". I didn't intend to be pejorative with the term 'timesink'. Just too much for me. But I'll admit I probably got a bit defensive after being told I was wrong for xyz reason by so many people on a matter of personal priorities
