  • Over 60 years the cost of taxes to build and maintain a transit system plus fares is an order of magnitude lower than building highway networks, ownership of personal vehicles, insurance, fuel, and rebuilding the road network after 30 years.

The idea that transit is more expensive was a mind trick by the fossil fuel and automotive industries. We’re penny wise and dollar foolish.

  • I was looking at cool world record gokart pictures in 2008, and the next day the sidebar on Facebook was full of ads for the shitty kart track by the highway. It felt dirty and unsettling as a 13 year old that everything I was interested in would immediately be sent straight to the weirdest meth head carny I knew.

Then the Snowden leaks happened, and at that point I was fully radicalized.

  • 5 yrs for free is LTS, 10 for “Pro” enterprise subscription ($$$).

  • No, he created a hedge fund structured as a 501(c)(3) to avoid paying taxes on inheritance for his family. The “non profit” may do some good while in the process of tax sheltering a billionaire’s estate, that’s not the primary purpose of it.

  • Taking this opportunity to personally thank you for making a good logo, I absolutely love the Debian swirl! There are so many boring geometric or single-letter logos out there, the details and texture of the swirl is just so good.

  • Absolutely love Pixelfed. It really captures the vibe Instagram had in 2012 before FB ruined it.

  • Fwiw, I’ve had great results with upgrading Debian derivatives. A machine in my closet has been upgraded from version 8 -> 12 without any major issue. Usually, upgrade problems come from custom or third party software in my experience.

  • They’re a skilled worker that has memorized the codes for the different types of potatoes, a skill I am unlikely to learn.

  • It’s pretty good. I understand and somewhat agree with the concerns about concentrating the web around one company, but tunnels is simply a great product. So convenient for running services behind CGNAT or dynamic IP without good port forwarding options, and it’s just set and forget. If there was an alternative that good I’d use it.

  • Electric busses are actually a lot more complex logistically than electric trains. With a train, you just need a bunch of big-ass transformers and overhead wires. Expensive to install, but very reliable and relatively low maintenance over many years.

Batteries on the other hand are heavy, relatively fragile, degrade quickly, and very expensive. With a 100KWh EV, about 1/3 of the total cost is the battery, so it would likewise increase the cost of a bus.

Charging is another problem, instead of the whole system using energy real-time, you now need a distribution system that can take hundreds of busses at night and charge them all back up, requiring a massive amount of power in a somewhat short time. While it’s nice that energy is generally cheaper at night, you still need the infrastructure that can take that load.

So, it’s not to say that there’s no place for them, just that our main focus needs to be on rail in most places. There are lots of low-density places with cheap power and temperate weather that absolutely need BEV busses, but a lot more with challenging weather, older grids, and medium density that are a better fit for rail.

  • My city has been even more dramatic.

    2016 - $680

    2022 - $2200

Over 300% increase in six years.

  • If you’re strong willed and stubborn, Zoneminder will work fine. It takes a lot of tinkering to get everything to work correctly, but it does work decently.

  • We will need to drastically change our zoning rules very soon to keep up. Most sane countries allow all land use other than industrial and agricultural inside cities, and they’re better for it.

  • That would never happen, no maintainer would open themselves up to that kind of liability.

  • Not strictly RSTP, but the “zmninja” app works with a Zoneminder server, which can record and manage RSTP/ONVIF cameras. I would really recommend some sort of NVR (like Zoneminder) if you have cameras since there’s a low probability you’ll be able to watch them live all the time.

  • If you have a car get a dashcam. It’s more valuable than any insurance because it will definitively prove what happened when something goes wrong. Bonus: you can post videos of bad drivers doing stupid things on the internet for imaginary points.

  • If I got 3x the vacation time from work to let me travel by oceanliner or airship I’d happily stop flying — but that would never happen. So instead we just have to use discretion for both. Eat more mushrooms & beans; take trips closer to home by rail. And yes once in a while enjoy a nice steak or take a trip overseas. Moderation is key.
