  • I honestly don't understand what all the resistance against these concessions are. Sure, in dollar terms it's sizable, but reparations don't need to be in dollar terms: they can be given through economic concessions that stimulate the economy as a whole.

For example, First Nations land within cities can be given zoning concessions to simultaneously address the Canadian housing crisis and drive profit to First Nations. First Nations businesses can be given greater tax concessions for R&D. The Canadian government can use its liabilities as a blank cheque to invest in anything, so long as First Nations people are the ones who profit from it.

  • Watch as this cap disproportionately affects students going to good schools with proper admissions processes (UBC, UofT, McGill, Waterloo) and does nothing for the massive "degree mill" industry in Canada.

This is Trudeau solving the symptoms without solving the problem. As always.

    Edit: my criticism was premature.

Canada unveils new restrictions on work permits for international students, spouses

the federal government will stop issuing postgraduate work permits to international students who graduate from programs provided under so-called Public College-Private Partnerships.

    Good fucking job Trudeau.

  • The U.S. remains the only rich country that still had net positive views of Israel. Net favorability dropped just 2.2 percentage points, from a net favorability of 18.2 to a net favorability of 16 from September to December.

  • Chinese travelers are opting to travel domestically or regionally instead of taking long-haul international flights. Domestic flight volume has skyrocketed, domestic HSR volume has exceeded pre-pandemic levels, and that's come at the cost of international travel.
