  • That makes way more sense!

  • Maybe a take on Google/Alphabet? He might think it gets (purposely) drowned in the results so he won't be able to find it if he doesn't save it? No idea though..

  • Especially because Steve said "auctioned" and not "sold". Nice strawman, same as his "bad journalism" take. It only leads the discussion away from the allegations.

  • I'm on a german instance (feddit.de) and it's federated with db0.

    I think it's just lemmy.world bullshit.

Has anyone read their post about their downtime?

"We shouldn't close registration or limit the amount of communities because we're not even the biggest instance in the fediverse"

Like, what?! The argument was always that they are the biggest in Lemmy! It felt like they were trying to gaslight the users.

Same as the other arguments, like new users being weirded out if they can't register to lemmy.world or apps using them as default. So them being down all the time doesn't matter? Or that lemmy.ml was the biggest instance and closed down registration and new users registered to other instances without a problem?

I'm really weirded out how hard they try to be the "main" thing on Lemmy.

  • But you can't base a fact on one accident. Or even multiple. What if newspapers like to write especially about Tesla accidents to generate clicks?

Teslas seemingly have a lot of accidents, but without checking the statistics and comparing it to other manufacturers you wouldn't really know if the perceived truth is a fact or not.

  • You made the first comment: "Teslas aren't safe", without providing proof.

And now you're calling someone a hypocrite because he asks for data of exactly what you claimed, while you're redefining your first argument as "the contrary".

So, do you have proof that Tesla's aren't safe in comparison to other cars, or is it just your opinion?

  • I think it's their counter-argument to:

"If earth is really flat, why do ships disappear behind the oceans horizon?"

    "Water mountains"

  • Interesting! I tried it a bit more:

    • I had "Undetermined", "Deutsch" and "English" selected in my profile.
    • I was able to set the comment to "Undetermined", but then still not able to set it to "Deutsch" (back to "English", worked though)
    • Changing the word "homie" didn't make a difference
    • Other comments set to "Undetermined" were able to switch to "Deutsch"
    • Other comments set to "English" (that were actually written in english) were able to switch to "Deutsch"

Seems like it's a problem with this comment in particular, but I can't figure out why!

Edit: I found another comment set to "Deutsch", written in german, that can't be changed no matter what.

  • I'm trying but the save button just loops endlessly..

What difference does it make? Aren't you able to see the comment?

  • It has of course nothing to do with the enormous amount of money they rake through their app store by squeezing both the developers and the users.

Why would they try to force people to only use the store by implementing more and more security features along the way!?

    It's a mystery!

  • Alle meine Zuhausis hassen Waldorf Frommer!

  • I agree with your points and like the idea of more specialized instances and also country related instances. I think it's solvable if the different admins work together.

Lemmy.world doesn't have to go private, they could just not accept more users and communities for a while. It wouldn't change much since everyone will still be able to post and comment on Lemmy.world from all instances. New users would just have to choose a different instance that's all.

For me that's the whole point, I don't see any benefit of a big instance, the Lemmyverse doesn't need one.

  • Understandable, but aren't growth and instability related in this case? There are many instances with capacity that are already run by capable people. Just spread the load (ahem) across the Lemmy verse and only handle as much as you can. But maybe I'm missing a point, I just think that this would be the best for Lemmy in the long run.

  • How about another approach?

There is no good reason for Lemmyworld to keep on growing to an extent that this kind of overhead is necessary. The idea of Lemmy is decentralization and not creating a new reddit instance. Close your registration, limit your amount of communities and let Lemmy grow in other directions.

  • Created my account in Oct. 2011 after a long time of just lurking. Leaving reddit feels weird, sad but also right, like a breakup that was long overdue.

  • Well, I guess all the life forms that are going extinct through the Holocene/anthropogene extinction event, which humans caused, don't matter?

Sure there will be life on earth and it will adapt, but don't act like we're not taking down whole families of plants and animals with us.. because it's already happening.

  • *roommate

  • Now with googles DRM plans everyone should consider leaving chromium based Browsers.

The only way to retain the little freedom and privacy that we still have is if we start to care and put in at least a bit of resistance.

  • Expelled for crimes against humanity? Do a Nuremberg trial II and let the judges decide their punishment.

  • My opinion:

    • Framework has a good track record and I would give them the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. (Concerning upgradeability)
    • laptops are getting more and more powerful and I like the idea of treating them similar to a desktop
    • as a ThinkPad user you probably know how popular especially old ThinkPads are, because of the ability to mod them
    • you might buy a new laptop every few years but the point above proves that there will be people interested in a second hand laptop, therefore reducing waste
    • there will always be a market for good quality and customer friendly products and the existence of framework is great for competition (for the end user)
    • they support the open source mentality, even tried to help to bring coreboot to their laptops. Even though that failed they're keeping an eye on openSIL
    • overall I'm more of Linux instead of Windows, FOSS instead of corporate closed software, Lemmy instead of reddit and framework/system76/.. instead of Lenovo/.. kind of person. I see it partly as a fight for "freedom" if you so will.
