  • Would be interesting to know what actually happens.

  • BorgBase allows for append-only backups.

    1. OBS Studio, or even Xbox Game Bar (built-in, but might be disabled at your work PC)
    2. ShareX
    3. 7-Zip
  • CrowdStrike Falcon literally runs as a kernel module. It can "break any of the good operating systems" (like your favorite Linux distribution) just fine.

  • You're likely already paying for silicon you don't use. Take AVX512 instructions (or other more exotic instructions) for example, or unused PCIe lanes, certain encoders on your GPU etc.

Also, people thinking they have no use for an NPU are almost certainly already using them, for example when taking a photo with their phone.

  • That is correct, but AI features have been pushed back to 18.1.

  • Is your typical noise floor even under 20 dB? HDDs are also a lot louder than 5-10 dB, and manufacturers usually list dBA in their spec sheets, not dB.

  • Yeah I guess that's somewhat reasonable, but their weight would've been quite on the edge either way.

  • They are switching to Mercedes engines though..?

  • How anyone could prefer Windows to Linux is truly a mystery to me.

I doubt most people would base their decision solely on the update experience.

That being said when I used Windows regularly up to the end of last year, installing updates wasn't really a problem or even something I really noticed. It didn't really nag me to restart or whatever and just did its thing when I shut the computer down, taking half a minute longer every now and then - but I don't care because I just wanted to shut down anyway.

Fedora (and I'm sure more distros) apply updates on restart by default if you update via GUI ("Software" in GNOME, "Discover" in KDE). This also requires a "double restart" (I noticed it because you also have to enter your LUKS passphrase twice). Sure, you can update packages in-place, but depending on the update (not just the kernel) this can cause issues/anomalies with the running system. I've had some Mesa updates without a restart cause games to stop working or misbehave, also video decoding.

  • My GitHub pretty much is my folder of shame.

  • It made Red Bull's setup choices look decent to keep the McLaren behind and also nerfed tyre deltas quite a bit as evidenced by Russell vs. Hamilton (disqualification aside, HAM couldn't pass RUS on track).

  • I doubt any of the rumored contenders have the pace to challenge Max, and even if they had occasionally, Red Bull doesn't beat around the bush with team orders.

  • 1.5kg sounds like a big ask to pick up in marbles.

  • Exciting starting grid. Ferrari on pole with Leclerc but likely to be slower on race pace than some of the cars behind. Perez joining him on the front row, McLaren likely the fastest car, might be close with Red Bull though, different setup philosophies as well, and also "only" P4 and P5 on the grid so at least with some amount of work to do. Hamilton in P3, Russell behind the McLarens, behind that cars mixed up all over the place with a hungry Verstappen from P11 who looked mighty in qualifying yesterday. Will be interesting to see whether their setup choice of higher downforce was correct and he'll get some good overtakes in, or if he'll be stuck in a DRS train. The undercut is very powerful here as well (naturally with a 7km circuit).

I think on paper McLaren should 1-2 this, but they probably should've 1-2ed the last few races judging by their car performance and only managed it once. Verstappen should be somewhere among the Ferraris and Mercedes. But it's everything to play for.

  • These are some low bitrate movies. Mine is probably at least 10x that size but nowhere close 10x the content.
