  • So... ad hominem? That's all you have, Putin?

  • Most of my text files are from Unix/Linux systems, because I don't work much on Windows. So Wordpad is more important than Notepad for me, because the latter one does not handle end-of-lines correctly.

  • What you want to compare is how common people are living in a coutry and how much they can actually buy. That's what PPP is for ("purchasing power parity").

  • I think SteamOS might help a bit, but the driving factor might be that Microsoft decided to ditch much of good hardware on their upgrade path to Windows 11.

  • I need to go 40km to work. It's 30min by car. And 90min by public transportation. I don't want to waste 3 hours a day when I can waste 1 hour.

  • And the range is a problem, if your time is limited.

  • SysV init is crap, but so is systemd as init process. One example is that an admin needs to know why the system does not boot properly. In this case the kernel messages help. systemd is not helping here.

I've currently one problem that I need to solve, but I need 2 people, one to make a video, the other to press Ctrl+Alt+Del to capture an error message that appears for 0,1s after sending the key sequence, when my PC does not boot. This is crap! Why the hell it does not boot occasionally, I have no idea and I've been an Linux/Unix admin for 25 years now. Why I cannot find it? Of course because systemd doesn't even log it!

This is brand new when systemd appeared. I loved to see the kernel messages to full extent...

  • My Arch broke when they changed to systemd. I couldn't boot properly. Debian did it better.

  • No one says the devices are anti consumer, except for some that are intentionally made incompatible with common replacement parts (missing "apple logo"). The walled garden is.

  • You're right. So many people to thank here. One thing you cannot deny is that Valve is one of few companies that loves gaming on Linux and it deserves a huge credit.

  • It's too much work to find a movie on Amazon Prime. So I don't watch them very often.

    TV? Haha.. what is TV?

  • Cabin?

  • I play Baldur's Gate 3, too. But I don't know what I'm doing... I found out I lost Laezel somewhere.. I don't even remember where and thought it was just a tutorial... I'm too weak to fight Nere and cannot move on in the main quest, because "it's too dangerous" and I don't know where to go to get stronger. I'm wandering along the old areas and try to find out what to do.

  • In newer versions it's entirely blocked. I've unlocked OnePlus 6 and it was quite easy, because there were no updates for Android 12. On OnePlus 7 it was a different situation I needed to downgrade first to be able to unlock the bootloader. And it only works with vendor tools in a special service mode. These tools are not provided for new phones anymore as far as I know. And I mean, what do you want to downgrade to when Android 12 bootloader stock image is locked.

  • Partially off topic, but I won't buy OnePlus anymore, because they lock down the bootloader.

  • The only case where I'd use a virus scanner is when I'd host a file server for Windows systems.

Btw, ClamAV is slow and generally awful. It has many false positives that you get spammed all the time. There are also cases where it doesn't really find the virus (false negatives). It's also buggy and it's not a good sign for security product.

I'd still recommend Linux, if you want to be safe. Windows has never been designed with security in mind. It's not even a proper multiuser system.

  • I'm not particularly for the Green Party in Germany, but Mrs. Baerbock seemed to do something right to anger some Chinese officials that much that she needed to take public transportation for a meeting.

  • Or Jitsi Meet. And it's not only free, but it can be run be everyone.
