  • It’s not like we’re choosing to let domestic violence to continue. We’re just as powerless as anyone else.

I think this is really interesting, who do you think can?

It's also true that male loneliness is pretty significant, and lonely guys are more prone to developing extreme and hateful views but the only people that can do anything about man to man friendships are other men.

There are some fantastic initiatives like lens sheds that are trying to knit a healthy social structure and almost nobody participates in them.

  • “but you are a white man, you can’t help anyone” or something of the like. Really sticks with you.

That's a silly thing to say but it also sounds like it came from the mouth of a teenager? Teenagers say lots of dumb stuff I wouldn't recommend forming societal views based on them.

Most women have had the experience of being humiliated sexually, and belittled intellectually by young men. Do you feel that women should feel like we're under attack?

  • This is what confuses me. I am mostly a lesbian but have dated men a few times. I never resented their traits I would consider manly.

My sisters are married to men and they seem to enjoy the fact that they're men. They expect their partner to be sensitive, tactful, and mature but that is a basic expectation of every adult and not hard to meet.

My dad is a man, he's extremely handy and always willing to show us the ropes of some task or help out with his knowledge. That seems like masculinity to me.

I don't understand what men feel like they're not allowed to do that is "being a man". I get some stuff like roided up beauty standards are ridiculous but every human alive deals with impossible celebrity beauty.

  • Could you just summarise it because a video is sort of an inaccessible format for public text discussion?

which state election? Or do you mean federal 3 years ago?

  • “middle path of masculinity”, between the “emasculated” and “browbeaten” male of the far left and the Tate-like women haters and “pickup artists” of the far right.

“We want to foster the good side [of masculinity],” he says. “Which is being on the mission, wanting to be strong, being something of a warrior, but also being the good man, the loving husband, the loving partner, the good father”

“There is a vitriol against that idea[...]"

If you ask most people who allegedly want to brow beat men what "good masculinity" is you would probably get stuff like:

    • strong and helpful
    • patient
    • skilled
    • protects people
    • Loving and attentive
    • Takes care of body and mind
    • Good in a crisis

This guy is claiming men are attacked for wanting to be strong, loving, a good father, and 'something of a warrior'

Idk what the last means but I basically only see men attacked for

    • treating women as less then men
    • using violence to solve problems that could be talked out
    • using violence on the vulnerable

Which uh, notably aren't in his list of reason men are attacked. So I want to ask what men's opinions are.

  • Not actually true anymore but they're not very performant.

Fine for a handgun to kill someone up close with, but it's not like making a machine to dohickey someone a la Abe is very difficult.

  • Is it praxis to blow up lemmy.world to decentralise the 'verse?

  • lmfao this is hilarious

  • The above comment is made of glyphs arranged to convey meaning. The Code of Hammurabi is made of glyphs arranged to convey meaning.

So the comment will very well be likely a significant contribution to human culture.

  • soz but are the animals killed for the cat food not equally deserving of life and happiness as a cat?

  • I used to agree, but nuttlex buttery is actually quite good!

although personally don't add fat to much, being an enthusiastic cook that is growing sideways a little more than I ought to.

  • Hope that's oil or margarine on that popcorn! Chicken salt is fine though, amusingly it has no chicken in it. Weird name huh?

  • Hi! I'm the mod that started this all! I think everyone who uses the phrase "obligate carnivore" is outing themselves as a complete buffoon since it has literally 0 application to whether or not it is possible, which would be obvious if people looked up the definition.

But of course, that would be expecting a lot from people :)

  • idk man I went through the modlog and you kinda seem like a shithead. You admit to trolling vegans, you post some pretty ridiculous stuff, and go around explaining to vegans how to be vegan while saying that you aren't going to be one. It's kinda not really making your "I'm an innocent little user who was unjustly banned" case. It looks like maybe the straw that broke the camel's back so to speak.

  • Without evidence this is just slander /shrug

Although personally depending on the context I don't see an issue. Like if I go make a bunch of horrible, racist, "jokes" on shitposting or whatever and the beehaw admins ban my account from their server pre-emptively as I'm not of the character they want because of their bee kind policy. That seems... fine?

I can always make another account I behave in line with their goals on to participate in their server.

  • I am an eternal optimist in my beliefs of human goodness and social ingenuity.

  • vegantheoryclub.org is a vegan run instance that was created pretty much precisely because of shit like this.

I think it's worth communicating how this admin is using their powers, and to other people that the vegan community was taken over by an anti-vegan carnist for personal reasons. So that users can make up their minds over where they want to participate.

Outside of that I don't really care, I'm not optimistic they'll be reigned in and think lemmy.world is not a very well run server for reasons like this.

  • What do you think self discipline is? Like what does it mean for someone to have more or less of it? How could you tell?

I ask because to me it's executive function. which had a physiological basis and varies based on physiological state. So someone without a well functioning executive function system's best would look kinda arse to someone who had a functional one.

  • OP have you considered that the state you're seeing them in is them trying their best?

Best isn't static right, like when I run some sometimes my best is wheezing and throwing up through 5 km in 50 minutes because I'm hungover and sleep deprived, sometimes it's getting shoes on and stepping outside before deciding to quit, and sometimes it's nailing a pb on a 15 km run and only cutting it short because I have responsibilities and shit.

You just don't know what's going on in someone's life. I am diagnoses adhd and have been undergoing treatment for 15 years. Mostly I seem like a kinda lazy spinster with too many hobbies and an untidy yard; sometimes I'm a whirl of activity and achievement; and other times I spend 3 weeks paralysed on the couch, absolutely wracked with guilt and self loathing, pleading for my brain to just give me enough of anything to feed myself for the first time in 3 days while my head pounds from dehydration and I want to peal my skin off for how dirty and uncomfortable it is.

Every moment is me trying my best. I can't imagine not extending the courtesy of that belief to everyone else.
