  • Umm penicillin? anaesthetic? the Haber process? the transistor? the microscope? steel?

I get it, the models are new and a bit exciting but GPT wont make it so you can survive surgery, or make rocks take the jobs of computers.

  • Netflix Buddy, friend, matey. If I have to pop open Google to find where I can watch something, find the best offers on pricing, and how to circumvent ads or whatever, or how to get Netflix to run on my devices without installing invasive crap or derooting my phone etc, and it's actually quite expensive.

I'll just do one search and not worry about whether I'll have to fight ads, or automatic iffy quality settings, weird compression algorithms, device compatibility etc.

I was happy to hang up the peg leg when I could just VPN to usa and watch everything for the price of a lunch a month. I like simplicity, I enjoyed your more arty shows. It was you who changed the deal Netflix, not I. you decided being insanely profitable wasn't enough and you needed infinite growth.

  • No, they can summarise articles very convincingly! Big difference.

They have no model of what's important, or truth. Most of the time they probably do ok but unless you go read the article you'll never know if they left out something critical, hallucinated details, or inverted the truth or falsity of something.

That's the problem, they're not an intern they don't have a human mind. They recognise patterns in articles and patterns in summaries, they non deterministically adjust the patterns in the article towards the patterns in summaries of articles. Do you see the problem? They produce stuff that looks very much like an article summary but do not summarise, there is no intent, no guarantee of truth, in fact no concern for truth at all except what incidentally falls out of the statistical probability wells.

  • That's my point. OP doesn't know the maths, has probably never implemented any sort of ML, and is smugly confident that people pointing out the flaws in a system generating one token at a time are just parroting some line.

These tools are excellent at manipulating text (factoring in the biases they have, I wouldn't recommended trying to use one in a multinational corporation in internal communications for example, as they'll clobber non euro derived culture) where the user controls both input and output.

Help me summarise my report, draft an abstract for my paper, remove jargon from my email, rewrite my email in the form of a numbered question list, analyse my tone here, write 5 similar versions of this action scene I drafted to help me refine it. All excellent.

Teach me something I don't know (e.g. summarise article, answer question etc?) disaster!

  • So super informed OP, tell me how they work. technically, not CEO press release speak. explain the theory.

  • Tobias. Totes tragic.

Rachel becoming a fucked up person who only knew how to live in war was also great.

Tomorrow when the war began was another childhood fave of mine.

I wouldn't say that sort of stuff was unheard of. My mum gave me some super tragic books about Polish kids during the war, there was loads of stuff with like thawing dead soldiers enough to steal boots etc. My mum's Polish so fed me a lot of grim stuff to read to help understand her parents and their experiences. Idk if you're usaian? maybe popular stuff was a bit more sanitised because of moral majority stuff?

  • Because children are interested in darkness and fiction is a safe place to explore it and contextualise it?

  • Surprise. Treating sentient beings like property leads to abuse. Maybe just don't don't try to own sentient beings.

  • Elden ring (had to stop playing on release due to arthritis, hands working better atm). It's pretty good. I got up to volcano manor on release, doing liurnia atm so still on the easy/familiar stuff although finding a few things I didn't get last time.

Dual Scythes are fun but garbage slow in pve so I might respect after the fight with empty nester. Trying a dragon communion build but there aren't many dragons early game so mostly I just have no useful stats so far haha.

    Palworld. It's also pretty good.

Imagine breaking so many hearts with one hang glider trailer that you spawn an open source mmo.

Castle story was the other big horror show.

  • australia

  • What do you mean why? it is the goal of all states to enforce cultural homogenaity and legibility.

  • The state requires steralisation in order to change gender in documentation. Specifically I had to be steralised and then "inspected" by two doctors to confirm.

  • I'm 32. when I was born cops in my city were killing gay men for fun, when I was teenager I was bullied relentlessly and beaten within an inch of my life for holding hands with my lover (thnx Muhammad for taking me to hospital, wherever you are), in my mid twenties it became legal to get married. Now my neighbours are mostly ok with me and my wife.

A lot of people got hurt or killed to get here, it didn't happen by accident. People were disruptive, sometimes violent, but we got here. That said the state still steralised me and maintains that eugenics program, so there's a long way to go.

  • mushrooms are not fruits in any sense. Fruiting body is applied colloquially however since spores are not fruits this is also incorrect.

However much like with calling a tomato a fruit, it's perfectly clear to call the penis loo lookin' thing a fruiting body and only derranged pedants are bothered by it.

  • ahem different models for different circumstances.

  • It is also the emotion that happens right after confusion but before fear after someone punches you in the face.

  • It would only take one country to field a team of trans women for prestige (quietly of course) if there was a clear advantage. Countries have engaged in various other schemes to supposedly improve performance previously.

  • This question is loaded. Trans women are not really biologically male, depending on the time transition happened there will be varying degrees of masculinised secondary sex characteristics but things such as fat distribution, muscle mass, organ size changes etc are going to look much more "standard" female than male.

AFAB women aren't excluded from sport if they're unusually tall, or have PCOS, or some other hormone variation that leads to an advantage. Women with PCOS will have an advantage in sport involving strength because they have much higher levels of testosterone (some grow patchy beards ffs) but nobody makes a fuss over that.

All sport is inherently unfair, we try and set limits of degree of unfairness. There is no evidence that trans women have more advantages than all the usual variations in women we allow competition among without issue. The Olympics has allowed trans competitors since 2004, where are all the trans gold medalists? where are all the trans women winning everything? Have you seen the differences in male and female records for most sports? If trans women are meaningfully similar to men then the average trans women would just demolish many sports. This doesn't happen, only a few people have attracted attention for success and that's in an environment of media controversy with actively trying to seek them out.
