  • Yeah, if they were Indian. The culture around meat is different than in the West eg. some people only eat meat on a certain day or weekend. Even then, the approach is that meat is disgusting and needs to be cooked and spiced thoroughly before consuming anyhow. And there is already a long and popular tradition of simple alternatives to meat dishes like using potatoes or paneer (or "soy paneer" aka tofu to make it vegan)

Again, my point is that it is not about the individual but the social ingraining and pressure around meat as a category in itself for individuals

  • I get it but this is an emotional appeal. I'm just trying to explain the logic of what was being said here

I like the fake meat stuff too, and often try to make it myself even though I've never had meat on purpose in my life and actually throw up if I do accidentally. I just like the kitchen chemistry aspect of it I guess

I'm not saying we should stop making vegan alternatives to meat. I'm saying people should stop desiring meat or meat alternatives. Because logically that desire of meat is the cause of both meat and meat alternatives. Like how the cure to nicotine addiction isn't nicotine patches alone

  • Good job but not everyone has the mental fortitude you have displayed. I know plenty of people who tried going vegan, ate the fake meat and egg stuff, and just went back to the real stuff for the taste

Anyways it's not about the individual level, it's more the social ie the social ingraining to have the form and experience of meat contributes to the "culture" and demand of meat

  • The problem is that you're still fixated on the form and experience of meat. A full mindset change is more robust.

It's like how fake leather can help replace and reduce real leather usage, but if the trend of desiring leather died out in the first place, the whole problem is dropped altogether

  • That is not at all what this is like, completely ignorant metaphor

Imagine someone addicted to eating their poop. Perhaps they are reforming their ways, and for some time they take half measures like eating smelly chili. Eventually they realize their unhealthy fixation isn't really overcome by this, so they move onto food that doesn't resemble poop, like a salad maybe

  • I know we are currently in the ___ phase but where is the line drawn? Does this ___ justify genocide? Im not inclined to believe so.

The line is genocide, if nothing else. The blanks don't matter. Your position on genocide should be 110% against it, the extra 10% (ideally more) being proactive measures to fight fascism to ensure genocide never happens again in history.

  • There is a baggage associated with the word "cult" now.

It used to mean pretty much a specific practice of a religion. For example, in a polytheistic religion, you can choose a favorite god and perhaps even worship that figure exclusively, even while believing in all the others eg. later Hindu ishtadevata practices

This kind of cult evolved into those around mysteries or mysterious figures (eg. Eleusinia, Mithraism) and real-world figures like monarchs like the Roman emperor. Eventually you have the death cults of the last few decades which cemented the pejorative sense of "cult" and also inspired the sociology around the same. I should also mention, there is a chauvinism in this as well eg. cargo cults

To answer your question, there is this historical context to it. But also the perspective: one can look back through history or across the world to identify "cults" but not recognize that one lives in a culture or participates in cultish behavior themselves

  • There is a lockdown mode or something in the power menu that should disable biometrics until the next unlock with pin/passcode

Not defending the companies, just something to be aware of if you see a cop coming towards you in the distance

  • Great point! Have you seen the documentary Star Wars btw? They have some interesting counterpoints on the use of violence against one's oppressors in the interest of obtaining freedom from said oppressors.

  • Any biography about some liberal political leader, like that Obama one. I think people buy them just because they trend on the top 10 books to read list. But everyone I've met who has it just keeps it on their coffee table to make it seem like they're into reading now. The only one I know who finishes those biographies is my grandpa who is a little senile and bored now.

  • That seems disingenuous or ignorant. Ever since WW2 the US has pointed nuclear weapons against these countries and their allies. That was the zeitgeist of the last several decades.

Political boundaries and names might have changed since then, but nuclear weapons didn't become irrelevant. In fact, those nations have only grown up in the shadows of possible nuclear annihilation by the US.

Especially North Korea, born out of the Korean War which involved all the nations in question against the US which was ready to wipe Korea out of existence just to "contain" communism. Why do you think they are so militaristic and intent on having nuclear deterrents? Their alternative is experiencing genocide once again.

  • There is a logic behind this, but you kinda have to be a linguistics nerd to know.

L and W are pretty similarly pronounced in many languages including English. Over time, this plus the fact that some might have difficulty speaking the language (still learning, have a lisp, low literacy, etc) leads to Ls becoming Ws in places.

Long story short, L took the L sometimes in English

  • Nothing wrong with the classics! I play as a human usually too, sometimes an elf

Tropes are only annoying if done badly, or have become outdated. But the question of humanity will always be something we should ask

  • It's just mythology, third take. So humans are always the main characters of the universe.

Humanity is the middle race between extremes, between some lowly race like demons or dwarves, and some highly race like angels or elves. Tolkien just rephrased it, and so did scifi. Basically all of fiction where there are other humans with weird bodily features other species besides humans is just this trope redone.
