Is it not grotesque to give a random person 1.2 billion dollars in a lottery?

  • I would be willing to fall on that sword for the unlucky soul that wins that lottery. I actually knew someone that won the 10 million publishers clearance house back in the 1980's. Classic story of they were dirt poor before the win and dirt poorer about 5 years after the win. Banks lined up to give them loans and they took them all since the prize didn't pay out in a lump sum. After the interest their yearly checks and more were gone... But they had "stuff" for awhile.

  • Then you'll feel better knowing that in the US that whomever wins that Powerball will end up with less than half the amount they won. Taxes will eat up about 60% of the winnings .

  • Not all crimes will keep him from being president. Any guilty verdict from Georgia will send him to jail for a minimum of 5 years, no probation, no home detention. The only charges that if found guilty that would disqualify Trump from being president are with Jack Smith. Essentially, Georgia will send him to jail if he lives long enough and it will be possible for Trump to set another first, the first president to serve from jail because he could not pardon himself for state crimes and the governor has very limited pardon powers in Georgia.

  • I think this is for the most part true. The user should get to decide what to subscribe to and what to block. I think that having instances that are safe for work while others that will host everything else would be beneficial. It would almost be like having 2 accounts but not having to bother logging out and logging back in. That way if you are in a setting that let's say porn popping up on your screen would be an issue then you just switch instances to the safe one.

  • I have never been able to log in to Lemmy.world with any app. I think is may be the instance because I can log in anywhere else.

    • YSK: A car takes uses about seven seconds worth of fuel to start up. If you are going to idle for a period of time longer than that, you'll save fuel by turning your engine off.
