  • I cancelled my subscription a few weeks ago, because I got sick of paying for have them put not only their thumb, but their entire weight, on the scale to push Trump. I’m old enough to remember when they were a reputable newspaper.

  • The NSA has two jobs.

The first is to break into any computer or communications stream that they feel the need to for “national security needs”. A lot of leeway for bad behavior there, and yes, they’ve done, and almost certainly continue to do, bad things. Note that in theory that is only allowed for foreign targets, but they always seem to find ways around that.

The second, and less well known, job is to ensure that nobody but them can do that to US computers and communications streams. So if they say something will make your computer more secure, it’s probably true, with the important addition of “except from them”.

I won’t pretend I like any of this, but most people are much more likely to be targeted by scammers, bitcoin miners, and ransomware than they are by the NSA itself, so in that sense, following the NSA’s recommendation here is probably better than not.

  • And since no laws actually apply to the billionaire class, they have no existential fear of a Trump administration. Anti immigrant fervor? LGBTQ persecution? Oppression of women? Violent racism? “They won’t affect ME, or anybody I care about, but higher taxes and labor laws might mean I can only buy a thousand foot yacht every month, rather than the 1100 foot one I deserve.”

  • “The media has wildly succeeded in its effort to misinform many voters” would be more correct. This has been a relentless, deliberate strategy. If they had just been incompetent it would not be this lopsidedly wrong.

  • “Why does this microwave oven cost $1500?”

“Two reasons. The first is that it has to have a full network stack to allow it to download software from competing appliance vendors. The second is the cost that the manufacturer had to bear to develop software for every single other microwave sold. There are some pretty weird architectures out there, and they had to hire a whole bunch of programmers.”

  • People keep complaining that solar and wind give us “too much electricity at the wrong time”, causing power prices to go negative (as if this is a problem). Having a beneficial process like co2 removal that you can do at any time of day (the co2 isn’t going anywhere) that would soak up all that energy seems like a win win.

  • Yeah, but unfortunately with how charged everything is if he gets anything he will claim political persecution and try to be a martyr

He’s doing that now. He will do it if he is sentenced, and ALSO if he doesn’t get jail time. Appeasing him gets you exactly nothing.

( his campaign has claimed they already raised 55m since the conviction).

His campaign claims a lot of things, none of them true. It would be surprising if this turned out to be the first time they weren’t lying.

It's why I think he didn't get really anything bad when he violated the gag order so much.

I think the judge was going overboard to give every benefit of the doubt to Trump so there would be no basis for appeal. I hope that’s the case.
