Assuming you're also American, a lot of our towns and cities aren't pathed for it, and even where they are you are up against the careless/dangerous or vindictive drivers. Many people see bikes as an obstacle and frustration, and I have seen countless stories about horrific collisions and injuries, it's very discouraging at least to somebody who didn't grow up in a bike-friendly area.
