  • In my experience, people want "it will work." They will not accept "it could work" at all.

"It should work" is the perfect amount of hedge, even when you know "it will work," because all of us have been burned by simple assumptions that were right 1000 times before and were somehow wrong this time.

  • This is why "sure" or "yes" are not part of my IT vocabulary. "Should" is king. "We should be be able to do" or "that should work."

In the idiocy of stakeholders that want IT to be a magic wand to fix their ineptitude instead of a helpful contributor to their well thought out process, you have to coach everything in the polite "no" that is "maybe" or "should."

  • Sure, but that doesnt mean I want to mix its difficulty into code.

I like fried chicken too, but i don't try to somehow add json to it, no matter how sexy those nested brackets get.

Good things dont all have to be sluiced together into a juicy pulp. They can be good all on their lonesome. I can "git gud" in dark souls and enjoy well documented, consistent IaC as well.

  • NixOS : no dudes, its not raw screeching madness, its great. Just great. So great. Please read these 17 guides that are outdated more every minute to get started. Also, dont read that guide. We don't do that anymore, but there is no way for me to explain why unless you already know.

Ive tried NixOS three times now, and it hasn't took. Has anyone written a sane guide to the current iteration yet?

  • I had the hardest time with this. What I ended up doing instead was provisioning a dedicated vm to run as a tailscale subnet router, then just advertise my gateway and the applicable container IPs via /32 CIDRs. Tailscale will let you do multiple comma separated IPs when advertising routes, so it's easy to append a new service via IP.

  • Sync is falling way out of spec with lemmy at this point due to the lack of updates. See this thread for more info. The dev said he "hoped to update over the holidays" when someone reached out, but he hasent done so.

I've swapped over to summit, a FOSS app that is deeply customizable, has great gesture support, and is actively being supported. A lot of my sync issues like the above disappeared.

    I highly recommend it.

  • Some people fight because they are stunned and confused, as cops will often attack with overwhelming force without identifying themselves. Others fight because some people do get away.

In the grimmiest case, people fight because they know that they are about to get "death by cop" because some power tripping or racist asshole knows they can kill them and just get away with it.

I mean fuck, 13 prison guards just beat a man to death in a New york state prison hospital while he was handcuffed, and the only reason anything is being done is that 4 considered the murder so mundane they didn't even take off their body cameras. They dragged him in handcuffed and dazed, already clearly beaten, then proceeded to punch his face, kick is groin, stuff a rag into his mouth as he screamed, lift his body up by his neck, breaking his spine, and then pushed him up against a wall to die. They then stripped him, took of the handcuffs and put him on the gurney and pretended they didn't know why he was near dead. The NY AG release the footage of it. You can watch a dozen men murder him in cold blood. The worst part? It is clearly completely normal for them to do this shit. They just finally killed someone.

I can name a dozen more cases like the above off hand, in the wider world or in our prisons, done by cops or prison guards.

When faced with the above when you comply, why not try to fight your way out? If every stop is a possible death sentence, why not try to survive by killing them first?

  • People point out that the stroke he had after taking office very plausibly affected him. It's possible that it literally fucked his brain up, so now hes lost the plot.

Its no comfort, as hes now effectively a GOP senator for several more years and will be embraced with open arms, but it may not be duplicitious.
