  • Political labels are just a heuristic to shortcut longer conversations.

Sure fidelity is lost but time saved is nice. I wouldn’t be worried using them so long as you know what you mean when you use them.

It sounds like you’re conflating socialism with deprivation of individual liberties, if you can’t conceive of a socialist state where that isn’t the case then I’m not sure what to say.

Modern socialists that aren’t authoritarian aren’t advocating for that.

However a socialist state and maximising individual liberties are in opposition to each other. How can we expect the best outcome for the majority without curbing certain individual rights? Like for example, firearm ownership.

If you agree that capitalism must be dismantled then you’re a leftist in the true sense.

If you think there are redeeming qualities to capitalism then you’re not leftist.

Lemmy in my experience is just leftists arguing with each other about the best way to dismantle capitalism.

Anyone who thinks capitalism is salvageable gets berated, in my opinion, rightly so.

  • I don’t really care one way or another, I have my own political views.

I was more trying to unpack why this person kept getting banned.

A lot of people who claim to be leftist aren’t actually leftist and this can be shocking.

  • I’m no expert but as I understand it, a SEAL Operator is the SEAL you think of when you think of a Navy SEAL aka the guy in the frog suit with the gun rising out of the water to take a beach.

A Naval Special Warfare Officer is part of the support staff to the SEAL Operators effectively. I don’t know what specifically their function is (you can google it) but they probably do battlefield tactics for the actual Operators, they don’t go into actual battle.

  • You’re probably not leftist if you’re getting banned for expressing your views.

Caveat: I haven’t read your comment history but I’m going to now and I’ll come back and edit this comment with a more informed view.

Edit: I’ve read a lot of your comments and as best I can tell you’re a Social Democrat and that’s probably the issue. Feel free to correct me.

  • He was technically, if Wikipedia is to believed.

He was a Naval Special Warfare Officer so not a SEAL Operator but technically that still is a Navy SEAL.

I know nothing about this person other than their wiki but I’m sure they conveniently leave off the fact they weren’t an Operator when saying they are a Navy SEAL.

  • Looks like a lot of people of the conservative end of the political spectrum who can’t handle the leftist nature of Lemmy generally.

There’s an interesting thesis in this somewhere; conservatives respecting authoritarian power structures. Seems like they enjoy the boot of reddit.

IMO as Lemmy continues to grow those people will eventually find their way here. Conservatives love it when something is established and no longer new and scary.

  • Nah it doesn’t require violence but when the camera pans away as the villain dies it’s a bit unsatisfactory.

Or a large rock just falls on them it’s a bit cliche.

Avatar is set in a world where people use fire and no one is burnt to death? If that was shown people would really fear/loathe the fire lord etc etc. it’s not required but there were definitely parts in the show where it felt like the show creators were limited by it being a kids show.

  • Yes.

I always watch these shows in their entirety because I’m worried I will miss the part that makes them so popular.

Avatar is a kids show and that’s obvious when no deaths are ever really shown on screen.

Azula is ripe for some really graphic content but it’s always just alluded and hinted at offscreen.

  • Community is one of my all time favourite shows but lots of people just don’t get it. It was never a popular show when it originally aired.

I remember googling ‘community’ and the top result was the Wikipedia article for community it was that way going on season 3.
