  • I'm getting major "I'm asking for a friend" vibes off of this post.

  • There are actually specific words in the English language for precisely what you're talking about.

Endonym - The native name of a geologic feature or place. From your example: Nihon in Japanese.

Exonym - The foreign name of a geologic feature or place. From your example: Japan in English.

  • Pretty sure there have been a few spam bot/latent bot purges over the last month on multiple instances. I remember people discussing them a little while back. And it was a ton of bots.

So part of what you're seeing is normalization, as the user numbers were always artificially inflated with bots.

  • This guy. I swear that after he's passed on, and they're lowering him into the ground, he'll somehow, some way, still be commiting felonies from inside the casket.

  • It's pretty amazing that a guy who has picked up several dozen felony charges in the last few months has this little idea of how the legal system works.

  • It's hard to get steam into tablespoons. I was really impressed.

  • I'm kind of hoping that Larian realizes they forgot this, and just patches a fix to auto-install and run this with the game naturally, so that there isn't a need to go through this rigmarole.

They've been pushing for this launch date for weeks now, and to me, them leaving it out is the developer equivalent of a major league baseball player running out to the field, but leaving his glove in the dugout. Like, how did you forget that? lol

  • Seriously.

The only reason I know about this fix path is that I had to go through a similar fix for a missing C++ dist for another game a couple of months back. Had I not just randomly had to fix a similar problem recently, I'd have been clueless on where to start.

And casual users are just NOT going to know about these kinds of fixes, and will just be stuck with a game that doesn't launch. ¯(ツ)_/¯

  • That said, Georgia has a Republican governor that I believe has pardon power in his state.

I'm pretty sure that I've read recently that due to a string of really shady governors abusing the privilege a few decades ago, the governor has zero pardon power in Georgia.

They gave that power to a parole board, and my understanding is that they just don't grant pardons lightly... there has to be exculpatory evidence proving the innocence of the convict, and Trump is not likely to have any.

  • I'm sorry, but just because you're an extrovert who doesn't seem to have a social structure outside of the office, doesn't mean that the rest of us should have to suffer.

  • Am the the only weirdo who swapped over to Linux without knowing a ton about it, and didn't really have any issues? I just started with a Windows-user-friendly distro (Mint Cinnamon), and then just looked up how to get through any weird (to me) issues that I encountered over time. Gradually learned more about what's under the hood as I went.

But I see these memes and stories about "I tried Linux, it lasted a week and I went back to Windows" here and there.

It's not scary. Am I missing something? XoD

  • That doesn't sound like a different story.

I read this as: federal prosecutors go to trial with the goods.

97% of defendents recognize this immediately and plead guilty to try to get some leniency on their sentences. Only three percent of the grand total feel that the government's case is weaker... and three quarters of those people are wrong.

  • These things.

No more grocery bag handles cutting off your circulation and hurting your hands while you carry them. These are under ten bucks and life changing.

  • Our definition of spam may be different. I think of it on a personal level as "this guy / bot just cross-posted the same thing to five different communities within two minutes." Others wouldn't define that as spam.

  • OP said this happened in Utah, so maybe so!

  • Exactly. If you understand the risks or impacts or effects to yourself of whatever it is that you've decided to do (not only speaking about this issue but most things in general), and you've made a calculated choice to do said thing, as long as it doesn't harm me or harm other people, I'm totally cool with it, knock yourself out.

Another current example is the widespread legalization of marijuana. If you're an adult who knows the impacts of smoking pot, and you've decided to do so... as long as your smoke isn't bugging me or other people, then go to town.

Why should I interfere with your decision? You're not hurting anyone else, and you've made an informed choice about the impacts to you. That's ALL that should matter.

  • Connect for Lemmy has a block instances feature. No idea how well it works though

Instantly, completely, and perfectly. I know because I accidentally blocked my home instance (.world), and I had NOTHING on my local page. Took a few moments to figure out how to unblock it lol

  • I've found it much more effective to ban the spam posters / bot posters in general, instead of communities. That catches the worst of it and mostly eliminates all of the cross posting.
