Ah, it may have been unneeded. What I meant by that is that every living being is compelled to work on some level to survive and I wanted to be clear that I wasn't including that. Like, a lion must hunt for food, a lion is biologically compelled to do this work to survive but this isn't slavery.

To continue with that silly analogy, if some lions coerced other lions to hunt extra and took their extra food, that would be a form of slavery.

Not the same person but the answer is non-biological coercion of labor even if that's not the way it's often defined. If one lives in a system where they are compelled to sell their labor to survive so that someone can skim value from their labor this is a form of slavery.

The Great Filter makes the most sense to me. The traits that make a species likely to be space faring are the same ones like to cause it to filter themselves out of the future.

Intelligence such as ours is obviously a good idea.

Is it though? And does an actual intelligent species destroy it's own habitat and make life harder for future generations? I'd think an intelligent species would do just the opposite. We're not intelligent, we're adaptable and clever.

Concern about population is not racist. Can a racist use population to make racist claims? Sure, they do that with lots of things.

I don't get why so many otherwise smart people have the thought terminating position that population is of no concern and any talk of it is racist.

What happened with human population and the green revolution, particularly the haber-bosch process has a name when it happens in nature, it's called "eutrophication".

Well I agree with that part, when I'm saying using open source vs proprietary, I'm not proposing companies use alpha software in production. I was thinking more along the lines of avoiding MS Exchange in favor of of Postfix/Dovecot/CalDAV even though Exchange is arguably superior at managing one's emails and appointments.

We're all free to make the calculation that makes sense for us. Not everyone wants to sacrifice everything for profit, and this is a viable tactic.

At some point the shame overcomes the laziness and then I clean it.
