  • You, and nobody can stop them from doing so. It turns out that web UI technologies are very easily and conveniently usable for OS GUI features as well. Browsing a file system? Web UI. Navigating settings and configurations pages? Web UI.

And these browsers are open-source. Chromium. Edge is a derivative of Chromium, so is Chrome. The fact that Google controls the Chromium upstream matters not at all, because anyone is free to fork it and modify to their needs.

Freedom is a double-edged sword, but this is many folds better than locked-in proprietary.

  • Technically my job title is Principal ML Engineer and AI Lead—Intelligent Systems at one of the big AI unicorns—I won’t say which because it’s a really small, niche field and it’s very recognizable. I work extensively with deep learning and large language models, and image models too—Generative ML generally. Satisfied?

But AI is definitely a field. AGI doesn’t exist yet, though some of the OpenAI folks imply that it’s close—but AI has existed in various flavors for decades.

I probably know more about this field than you. And if that’s not the case, then we’ve probably met at a conference or two. Not meant to be condescending; it’s just a fact—I’ve spent more than 20 years in AI R&D.

  • Sorry, my jaded sense of humor can be a bit subtle at times.

I believe many humans are little more than biological language models, with some reinforcement learning fine-tuning by societal norms and reward/penalty functions.

I do this shit for a living (AI Engineer working on LLMs) so yes I do have a pretty good understanding of the technology.

  • I mean... it's not human intelligence no matter how many people continue the trend of inaccurately calling it that. It's a biological neural network. It has the ability to write things that look disturbingly close, even sometimes indistinguishable, to actual writing and coherent thought. There's no good reason to mistake that for actual intelligence or rationality.

  • Yep those are what I was thinking of; thanks for the cover, internet friend!

Also now I recall we were looking at pressure vessels made of Hastelloy; that was stupid expensive but they had corrosion-resistant properties that were very attractive for that application. And then management bought them and told us to deploy them for a process that was basically a low-temp filtration process. wtf, ok sure, the material is compatible but Hastellonis way overkill. Whatever, it’s your money to burn but damn.

  • There are alloys of stainless steel (I forget the numbers off the top of my head, it’s been more than a few years since I worked in that field) that are perfectly fine and compatible for food/grade hot-process work.

  • I’ve managed to stay away from Twitter while it was free.

Pretty sure I’ll manage when it’s blocked behind the paper curtain.

In fact, they’d have to pay me to join. And with all the new paying subscriptions they’ll have, maybe they’ll have enough.

  • Limitation of the medium, but designing an exploit for the vulnerabilities they find can take teams weeks, not minutes for a lone wolf Mary Sue.

Love the show though. White Rose is one of my favorite villains of all time; such a complex character.

  • AI is a lot sexier than “math and programming.” AI makes headlines/clickbaits a lot better than “Probabilistic Computation Graphs”.

I will admit that I have been enjoying the resurgence of thought experiments involving ethical computing, rules for AGI (eg Asimov’s 3 rules for robotics) and discussions of Kurzweil’s singularity.

  • Space battles in The Expanse are the best I’ve seen in all sci-fi. Actually Physics-Informed; like firing the thrusters to counter the recoil of their rail guns.

I love Star Trek but the tech woowoo always kinda drives me crazy. Even if it was a inspiration to become an engineer in the first place (the NCC1701-D Technical Manual was one of my favorite books growing up lol).
