  • WTF, I honestly hesitated to post this, because I felt like "We shouldn't threaten the Unity management" was so obvious that I felt ridiculous taking it seriously enough to break down the reasons. But the votes clearly indicate that that's not the consensus.

All I can say is, y'all need to study history a lot more than you have. I get that you feel justified in your viewpoint, but there've been a lot of people who felt justified in their viewpoint who then got proper fucked up because of it.

    1. There's a big difference between "start charging money for their software in a way you disagree with" and "destroy your livelihood."
    2. I'm gonna take you at your word that it sounds like you're saying threatening violence against the Unity management is okay. So even in the case of genuinely abusive and damaging companies (Nestle, Shell Oil), I think changing the rules so they're answerable to a justice framework is a way better way to go, as opposed to abandoning the justice framework and hoping nothing bad will happen. MLK and Gandhi came to this understanding when faced with a lot more evil systems than the Unity developers. Basically, there is an answer, but if the problem is that they hold the power and they're abusing it, taking the contest in the direction of a more power-based and less justice-based dynamic is tempting but it definitely isn't gonna get you the results you want. It's just gonna make things worse.
  • Agreed. Presidents are limited in their authority for a for-real reason, whether or not you agree with any individual thing.

I've known two whole separate people who saw substantial improvements in their direct reality of life after DACA, so it's hard for me to say Obama was wrong in doing it. But, I don't think "this is the law but that's way messed up, so let's pretend it's not" is a sustainable way forward.

  • Up to you. I subscribe to the Washington Post and Rolling Stone because I like being able to have journalism in the world that doesn't rely on an ad-supported model.

  • It's probably one guy from 4chan who leaves the house twice a year and has been "working on" his game for the last 15 years.

  • My friend did the Boston left on a 4-lane road in California and he said every driver in every lane panicked and came to a complete stop b/c they had no idea what he was doing. 😆

  • Yeah, Boston's the same. If you're trying to get where you're going and you get in someone's way, they're fine with it. If you're in the way because you're timid, they'll hate you for it. It takes some getting used to but it actually makes sense.

Also, it works (for a certain definition) - Boston is #3 in the nation for minor accidents but absolute lowest in the nation for fatalities. We'll smack into you maybe, but when the chips are down we're able to do what's right. There's some kind of overall statement about the city's culture there I think.

  • “We recognize there are sediments in the well water, which can at times affect clarity with a reddish-brown tint,” said DOC Spokesman Andy Skoogman in a release, who added the testing will include water from cell faucets. “It’s important to point out that although the water may be unclear, it has not been deemed unsafe through the routine third party water testing.”

Has it been deemed safe? Or is the system "¯(ツ)_/¯ IDK drink it good luck"?

(I mean, I already know the answer. The article talks about testing in general terms without really making it clear whether the water quality in the cells has been tested, when, or what the results were... which, to not answer the question is answering the question.)

  • Well... I'm not super expert about it, but I know it's pretty common for certain types of workplaces to have a bunch of people have security clearances because they're needed for certain projects. I have to imagine that there are lawyers who specialize in this type of work and maintain a clearance for it -- I would think the two go hand in hand; being experienced with classified-document-related defense and already having a security clearance so you can do it effectively.

I guess what I'm trying to highlight is that by hiring lawyers who didn't come into it with the right clearances to try the case, Trump is getting screwed to some level by himself and his past behavior. Instead of assembling the dream team of perfect defense lawyers for this exact situation, he's stuck with whatever cadre of weirdos are still willing to work with him.

Like I say I have no idea how big a deal it actually is for the case. It might be that with their interim clearance they're still getting to see everything they realistically need, IDK.

Edit: Actually, scratch that. By having lawyers who aren't experienced with this whole rigamarole of going into the SCIF to do chunks of their work, and don't have people on their staff who also have clearances who can help them with whatever they need without any extra difficulties, I think it's safe to say that Trump's chances in the case are definitely being hurt by this to some degree. Stop breaking the law, asshole.

  • Yeah. Like I say, I get why the defense is upset about it, but from an actual-reality perspective, the fact that they even ASKED to be able do anything outside the SCIF is fuckin' bonkers. It's just highlighting to everyone involved how un-seriously they take these things.

  • Lies. These people just don't know how Massachusetts works.

    • Put on your turn signal and wait? You're weak, I'm gonna close up the gap.
    • Just start nosing over? Eh, he's got gumption, I'll let him in.

    • Wait to cross at the crosswalk? What a maroon. No sympathy.
    • Charge blindly into the crosswalk? Carry on sir, I'll come to a stop for you, and we will exchange an understated wave. (1% chance I will flip you off and get mad for no discernable reason though)

If you're not from here, it seems like everyone's being a dick all the time, but in their mind, you're just not communicating that you actually need them to get out of the way or whatever.

  • You know those cases that involve a suspended drivers' license, and the judge asks whether the defendant drove themselves to court, and they say "... No?"

This is the first time I've seen the defendant's lawyer officially say to the judge, your honor my client's being prevented from driving to court, and I'd sure appreciate if your honor could help them get them their car back from the impound.

  • Empathy, I 100% agree with. I think the father in that situation should get a lot of leeway for getting overly emotional in his response. And I think I remember that the court system actually did do that: Gave him recognition of the fact that he was generally a good citizen who had a good explanation for why he lost his shit, and gave him probation and dismissed some of the charges.

I do also think the woman who he was in the argument with in the school board meeting has a right to her own safety and to say what she wants to say without somebody threatening her, whatever their reasons. I also think that it's relevant what is best for his daughter. I think usually that reaction of "something happened to my daughter so I'm gonna get violent against unrelated people" does more harm than good overall. Being solid and emotionally stable is usually the best thing you can do for your family whatever happens, even if it's easier said than done.

IDK, I'm not trying to sit in judgement of the guy. Like I say, I get it.

  • Ah yah makes sense 👍🏻

  • Hm, you might have to take specific steps to get subscribed to stuff you want to see. Personally I find browsing 'ALL' to be a pretty unproductive experience... what I might do instead is just navigate to a couple of the likely-seeming instances (roughly in order of "big -> good": lemmy.world, lemmy.ml, sh.itjust.works, kbin.social, sopuli.xyz, lemmy.blahaj.zone, mander.xyz) (also beehaw), pop up their big community lists, and do some copy-pasting into your own instance's search bar so you can subscribe to a bunch of the stuff from everywhere that you want to see. I've done that one time from a smaller instance and it seemed like worked out pretty well for me (in terms of the time investment being worth it for setting up a feed that I wanted to see.)

  • Time for the new game, "GPT? Or just bad writing?"

Mr Musk had initially rushed to embrace the news when Jenna, formally known as Xavier, transitioned at age 16.

But when she later cut him out of her life entirely, he knew he had a fight on his hands, a battle which would eventually culminate in the world’s richest man buying Twitter for $44 billion.

This is all that is said about her cutting him out of her life.

Despite his businesses, Tesla, SpaceX and Starlink, all outperforming their rivals and soaring in value, Mr Musk was still unfulfilled in April 2022.

Shivon Zilis, a director of Neuralink, Mr Musk’s AI firm and the mother of his twins, told him: “You don’t have to be in a state of war at all times. Or is it that you find greater comfort when you’re in periods of war?”

Mr Musk said his “default settings” include always wanting “to push my chips back on the table or play the next level of the game.”
