  • Yeah I know, I can just make a .desktop file or just make shell scripts and put them in my PATH for each alias I want, but that's prone to forgetting what I've done and I'd like to stick them all in one self documenting place.

  • I've got a question for you, maybe you have an answer. Is there a launcher out there for Wayland that allows you to launch $PATH, .desktop and allows you to configure aliases? I use aliases quite often in .bashrc and I'd like to be able to either use those or even better, configure them directly for the launcher so that I can launch TUI apps in a new terminal.

  • Yes, they have been turned into prisons. It sucks. I wish they weren't in there. People seem to be conflating my statement, "it's a dangerous environment", with something I haven't said, something like "these are criminals who deserve to be in there." All I'm saying is they're in there, it's dangerous in an environment like that, some people will try to hurt others in a place like that and since they're there you've gotta try to prevent that.

  • Look man, you lock a bunch of random people that don't all know each other up together, some of them are going to be up to shit. It's a dangerous situation, that I agree they shouldn't be in, but they are in and you want to make sure nobody hurts anyone in there.

  • Yeah I do. "On your own" is used very loosely here. You get a graphical installer, you pick from a list of DEs or WMs, make sure you want all the default software, done. You don't have to do the Arch thing, which is the hard part, and you still get an Arch desktop. And once Arch and your environmemt are installed, it's so much more user friendly than Ubuntu or Debian, you're "on your own" with any Linux system once it's installed and working, it's not like you have to dig into the guts of the system just to use it with any of them.

I installed Debian with XFCE a while back and it didn't even have curl installed. Ubuntu tries to force you to use snaps. I installed EndeavorOS, I haven't had to do anything extra except install the programs I want to use personally, all the graphical and terminal utilities you're going to need are just there and work the way you expect them to.

  • Not water. Water bottles. People in places like that make knives out of paper. A guy taught me how to start a fire using a pencil and toilet paper. You'd be surprised what some people can do with some simple materials in a place like that. I'd be willing to bet there's some security that's the direct result of something someone did.

The knives Sikh people usually carry cannot be drawn, FYI. They're harmless.

  • I don't know what he would do, I doubt veryuch different, and way less apologetic about it. But it doesn't matter what he would do, what matters is the optics. One has a track record of funding genocide, the other doesn't. This will sway a lot of people to at the very least stay home.

  • You go into the Trump circles. Pinch your nose and go see. Their pitch isn't "he isn't biden" or "vote for Trump or you're picking Biden." They actively like him and want him to be president, whether we disagree with that or not thems the facts. People aren't bringing up Trump because he's Biden's opposition, people are bringing up Trump because that's what the election is about. Biden's whole reason for viability is that he is running against Trump, that's it, that's all, that's his campaign slogan and platform. "I'm not Trump". People can stomach that when his public persona is "Barack Obama's VP", not so much when it's "he gave Israel money to fund genocide."

  • That's because Biden's entire pitch is "I'm not Trump". Nobody actually likes him or wants him to be president, they're just stuck with bad choices in front of them. So you talk about the merits of Biden, that's the only one you're going to get, because that's all he's got. And in the face of a genocide, people can't stomach it.

  • You can't scare people into supporting something they find abhorrent this time. This rhetoric is not going to work. We are talking about a fucking genocide my dude. You're delusional if you think "but pussygrabber" is going to motivate principled people.

  • I think the point these people are making here is that they'd like to not support evil at all and "but the other guy is worse" is the entirety of the fucking problem. Your mentality ensures this continues. You perpetuate this shit.

  • Water bottles for ablution and head scarves...

I doubt they let Jews have tefellin in jail either. Or Sikhs carry a ceremonial knife at all times. Not everything is a violation of religious rights, some things are dangerous to give people in situations like that. They make a good faith effort, they let them take time for prayer and eat at the right times during Ramadan, they don't make them wear immodest clothing, they can wash up before prayers. I wish they weren't in there, but it's a potentially dangerous place, the ingenuity people have with the materials around them you wouldn't believe.

"Islamically significant" lol who comes up with this stuff.
