  • They don't expire here, 3ither, but I found a 10-year-old gift card after a move and the company had switched to a new gift card system, so I had to spend an hour calling around to get my ancient gift card converted to modern store credit. It was not worth it for $20.

  • You may find some stores in some places that will take this stuff, but as far as I know this is not commonplace in much of North America.

Every single lowes or home depot has a recycling station for batteries and CFL bulbs at the entrance or near the customer service desk. I assume those stores are all over the country.

  • It's odd that people migrated from Firefox to Chrome in the first place.

I migrated from Firefox to Chrome years and years ago when Chrome was lightning fast with a bazillion tabs open and Firefox had some memory leak that forced me to reload a couple times a day. I have since moved back and realized all my old problems are no longer a thing, but I can definitely see why some would have made the switch and never tried moving back.

  • I savescummed nethack as a kid, telling myself I was learning how to play. Then one day I decided to play on an online server where that wasn't a possibility. There is nothing like the feeling of achieving a goal the legit way. I learned soooo much more during those many perma-death runs than I ever did by save-scumming, and I'm actually proud of those ascensions.

  • I know keeping a battery at 100% is worse than 80% for li-ion batteries. That is not the discussion. OP specifically suggested a constant full charge/discharge cycle as an improvement over leaving the device plugged in, and I can't imagine that being better for the battery.

  • No computer scientist will ever genuinely call basic algorithmic tasks "AI". Stop saying things you literally do not know.

Speak for yourself. Many of us fought that battle literally years ago and then accepted reality and moved on with our lives. Show me an actual computer scientist still hung up on this little bit of not-so-new-anymore language and I'll show you a dying curmudgeon who has let the world pass them by. We frequently use AI to refer to these technologies that we have today and we've started to use more descriptive language such as post-singularity AI or Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

  • What religious groups are you experienced with that have a high enough occurrence of homosexual members that it completely negates growth by childbirth? Is this just a complete fantasy in your head? I'm not familiar with any groups where that would even remotely be a problem.

  • Yeah, I get that. I treated my reddit account like that. My reddit account was 15 years old and you can do some sleuthing and doxxing and track down my real name if you're persistent enough. Nowadays I value privacy a bit more, so I just save important stuff to my second brain (these days it's in Obsidian.md, but I'm not married to a specific app).

  • Karma is nothing more than fake internet points. When I tire of this persona or decide I'd rather make my home on another instance, I'll just spin up a new name wholly unrelated to the old name.

  • The cone is the logo for their most popular project (VLC media player), but this is a message from the organization as a whole, which has the logo you currently see. It is not specifically about that one project.
