  • Agreed, I own a bunch of older handhelds with better form factors and large libraries of games. I tried to give gaming on iOS a go and it’s fine but the catalogue is still to small if you don’t want to touch gachas. I think this thing might be for people who play those though.

  • The reason for this to exist is for a phone + controller combo to be pocketable. Even the most compact add-ons like Razer Kishi are not exactly that. This should be somewhat similar but integrated for the weirdos that want it.

  • I thought it was cool but after I set my preferences to the overall visual fanfare and achievement popups I realised I gave away my medical data for free.

  • People that lived through 60s-2000s have seen technology explode and change their lives significantly for the better every couple of years. By comparison last 10 years have been especially rough except for solar panels and batteries maybe but it’s China that benefits from this mostly. The article suggests it’s the AI that drains industry from resources but I’d say the problem is deeper. Yes, we’re wasting resources at a fad but there’s also a point where things can’t be commoditised unless people get more wealthy and that has been going pretty bad as well. I don’t want the next iPhone. I want the next microwave or a car that I can afford.

  • I don’t mind cooperating with ICC even if it is for wrong reasons.

Very slow at the moment, probably due to people looking for Reddit alternatives but was fine couple of weeks ago when I first saw it. Seemed okay if you’re okay with AT Proto (it’s not that decentralised really).

  • Historically WaPo has been critical of Meta and X but usually they stuck to facts. This is almost made up and exists to exploit Trump’s neurodivergence where it’s likely he’ll see Meta and China in the sentence and act off the headline alone (sadly, this is a reflection of society in general). There are rules to post-truth politics even if truth is not necessary ;)

  • Yeah, the article falls flat immediately once you look into the details but what’s interesting is that it looks like American oligarchs are starting to attack each other openly (Bezos who owns WaPo attacks Zuck here) and this piece exists so that Trump might see the headline. I have no doubts that most of the big tech sold or traded all the data that they could confidentially already.

  • Microcode is used to „patch” a CPU in case bugs are found and allows tweaks to very low level logic. From the original research paper it looks like understanding microcode is a challenge, let alone writing new microcode. In all likelihood this will be used for more research and reverse engineering of things that are trade secrets closed from public knowledge.

Now that we have examined the vulnerability that enables arbitrary microcode patches to be installed on all (un-patched) Zen 1 through Zen 4 CPUs, let's discuss how you can use and expand our tools to author your own patches. We have been working on developing a collection of tools combined into a single project we’re calling zentool. The long-term goal is to provide a suite of capabilities similar to binutils, but targeting AMD microcode instead of CPU machine code. You can find the project source code here along with documentation on how to use the tools.

The zentool suite consists of tools for microcode patch examination including limited disassembly, microcode patch authoring using a limited amount of reverse engineered assembly, microcode patch signing, and microcode patch loading. We plan to also release details on how to decrypt and encrypt microcode patches in the future. A significant portion of the ongoing research is focused on building an accurate understanding of the AMD microcode instruction set – the current disassembly and assembly are not always accurate due to this challenge.

  • I had a misfortune of posting this piece of news to technology community on Lemmy.world and my inbox is hammered with replies from accounts created on the same day - they do not instil me with confidence. Plenty of people brag that they got banned for calls for political assassinations.

Reddit people are too incompetent to be truly evil like Meta is. I’m sure they’re mostly concerned about remaining profitable hence some cautious moves to monetise porn subreddits over the last 2 years.

  • It doesn’t matter what Reddit’s policy is when they outsource decision making to India where decisions seem to be taken without context or at random. It’s usually up to volunteer moderators to set the rules and tone for a community.

  • What Reddit believes to be bad content is often calls for violence or homophobia too. What they’re trying to fix now is that subreddits could be easily taken over by a brigade that could change the culture of the place very quickly and mods are powerless to stop it because it’s a whack-a-mole when votes are not public. That’s how Polish national subreddit went to utter shite for example, despite being one of the most libleft-leaning places back in the day. The damage was irreversible unfortunately.

  • I’m not sure about your impressions from this wave of Reddit refugees but I think we’re getting worst of the worst right now because the rule that Reddit is applying makes sense, despite Reddit being shit overall. Reddit upvotes aren’t public which makes people behave like a mob and now that they’re being punished for promoting rule-breaking content these people want a new outlet. Did anyone tell them Lemmy votes are public like everything else on ActivityPub?

  • Eh, don’t bully some random developer that created an app few people like. It was made for weirdos and those weirdos must appreciate having their own app.

  • My link for this was deleted. Huh. I didn't see this earier.

I’m getting an impression that lemmy.world federation has been super slow recently.

  • It doesn’t try to cater to everyone and there might be controversial design choices. This can mean anything from something great and ahead of time to absolute horrors of user interface design [link removed] depending on your perspective and a particular app in question. I really like what Photon does and how polished it is but it’s definitely not for me.
